I do not know how much money you plan to spend but without a doubt, I would say Canon makes the best digital camera. I like the Canon because of the quality of the pics. Canon a-540 point and shoot camera is an awesome camera that you will not be unhappy with.

Of course it depends on budget, but I can definitely make a recommendation.

I bought a Panasonic Lumix DC-01 which is a 6MP camera. It is very reasonably in price but the picture quality for a small digital camera is great.

What is best about it for me is the anti-shake feature. My previous camera was a Sony which I loved but found that 25-35% of pics had some amount of blur from small movements.

The Panasonic has helped me bring this down to probably less than 5% which means I have more pictures worthy of keeping and enjoying.

Go to www.dpreview.com in order to research anything about digital cameras and they have pricing too.

I am in the same position as you, and I am looking for the ideal Digi camera, and my choice stopped to:

Nikon Coolpix S9 and above
SD card compatible which are cheap, have lithium ION batteries which other cams also do, and best of all every camera shop iv been to, the reccommendations have been Nikon S9. S6 is about £20 to £30 more, but I have purchased the Nikon s9, and its a joy!!
Buy from Either Dixons or Amazon who both provide free delivery, and cost around £130!!! Bargain in my eyes.

Dont go for Sony as they use memory stick duo, which are really expensive and not very good, and dont get any FUJI or relative cameras because the media they use XD cards are highly rare, and they crash a lot, and cause media loss!! SD is the wat forward and cameras such as Casio, Nikon & Pentax offer the best shots, and lasting camera quality.

I have a Canon 350D, and I LOVE it. Despite the release of updates, the 350D is still rates amongst the best semi-professional digital cameras for consumers. Check my blog for the result:

Before my Canon, I had a Nikon Coolpix (5400) which is a brilliant camera as well, especially for starting digital photographers.

So I would go with Canon (they have simpler cameras too; try the Powershot) or Nikon.

Everyone will give you a different answer with regards to their preference.
So why should I be any different.

I love my Fuji Finepix. It's so simple and uncomplicated to use and takes brilliant snaps. It's also much better than my mates Casio Exilim. I've had it for about 3 years now. It's small, compact with a good sized lcd screen.

Go FUJI Finepix.

The most expensive ones.

Personally if you looking to get a digital camera I would go for a Sony. You will need arounf £500 to get a decent one.

I boughta Kodac DC 210 a few months ago. Being a digital virgin, it has proved ideal for me. It's easy enough to use but once you become more confident there are extra features that provide great photos.

Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fujifilm, Sony, Panasonic, Casio are all good. I would personally avoid any manufacturer other than those seven.
