he may just nbe neurotic honstly. Try to get a vet to shave the area and then get treatment for hot spots, He may have to get a cone. Also dogs do develop allegies I give my lab (100 pds a benadryl whern he does this. That is wht my vet told me to try first because it wont kill him but if is a antihistime blocker. He may be sleepy though BUT ONLY 1 PILL lots o luck

has your veterinarian checked for allergies? the dog might have food allergies, which are sometimes hard to detect because there are so many ingredients in dog food - it's hard to narrow the allergy down to just one ingredient.
has your vet checked for skin conditions? maybe you should take your dog to a companion animal skin specialist. it might be a little more expensive and a little bit of a drive, but at least then your dog would have relief.

It is most likely allergies. Innova makes a great food for dogs with allergies. You need to go to a *specialty* pet food store...but they are all over the place nowadays. The allergy formula is the one in the silver Innova bag.
It works great!

I had a fox terrier that chewed on herself a lot. She did have allergies and had to take prednisone at times..but she would also scratch when she was nervous. I would put Avon Skin so Soft on her and it would help relieve her itching. You might try it and see if it works for yours.

Have you bathed him lately? He could be allergic to the shampoo or something you have around your house. Also, he could have the mange (I think that's how you spell it). Their hair will fall out and you'll need to take him to get dipped. He might just have dry skin though or flees. My dog bites on herself a lot of the time and I don't know why. She is 12 years old. i think she does it to get on my moms nerves.

Go to a different vet and get a second opinion if your dog is doing strange things then there is something wrong.......could be anxiety......skin rash that you cant see......allergies in food or bedding.........mites......ticks....fleas......could be anything......but the vet....or some vet must know something. My mom's dog scratches his butt till it bleeds......cause.....allergic to various ingredients in his dog food such ingredients include corn.....tomatoes....wheat.....so I would check on that. Also alot of dogs are succeptible to anxiety disorder......and that leads to profuse itching.....scratching and biting. Good luck!

It is probably allergies. My moms golden retriever had the same problem, she changed her food science diet (lamb) and she was on a prescription, I will email you tomorrow with the name of it so you could talk to your vet.
