His tail feathers will sort of curl up; the females feathers will remain strait. This is usefull when they are about 6 month old or more.

All drakes, with the exception of Muscovey ducks will have what is called a "drake feather" which is a curly feather at the base of his tail. But during molts it might not be there. The easiest way to determine the gender of all domestic ducks (excluding Muscoveys which are actually a South American goose) is that females have the loud, sterotypical QUACK, whereas males have a soft whispering sort of sound.
