He feels lonely, puppies need a lot of attention when they are young.

You should have gotten an older dog if you werent going to be able to pay attention to it, or you should get another puppy so the other puppy has a companion.

Hi, I wish I knew how young your puppy is. When they are still tiny and newly separated from their families, something that smells like the bed he slept in at his other home might help. Some people wrap a warm hot water bottle in a soft towel next to the puppy, and an alarm clock,(also wrapped in something soft), might remind him of his mother's heartbeat. When he gets older something stinky from your own laundry will comfort him while he falls asleep. If nothing works, since it's not good for a pack animal to be alone all day, you may have to bite the bullet and get another puppy so he doesn't get all neurotic and resentful, and develop severe separation anxiety which causes the endless yapping. Every time you leave he doesn't understand that you are ever coming back. That takes a lot of time and happens sooner if you come home at a similar time. He'll be waiting, trust me! Let me know if all this was useless to you. All I can say is it worked for me.

Best of luck,Kitsune

It's tough for the little guy or gal the 1st few days being away from Mom & the littermates. When you leave the apartment, turn a radio on to a station that plays softer music, like classical, country, or pop, at a reasonable volume, so there is some noise. If you have the pup cage trained, cover the cage with a towel to darken its den. Make sure there are plenty of dog toys around & the pup is getting plenty of exercise when you are home, so boredom is reduced. As for your neighbors, talk with them about your new addition to your family & bring some goodies. If they are animal lovers, they may grin & bear it for a week or 2. Good luck!!

Your pup is lonely & scared. It is use to having mom & litter mates. To comfort your pup keep it in a crate with a shirt you have recently worn. Another thing I have heard that helps is a dog blanket or stuff animal designed for pups that has a heart beat. Go on line or if you have a Petsmart or ? ask them. When you are home, try to spend as much time as possible with the pup to comfort it. We have always had more than one dog at a time so this was never an issue for us, but one the pup feels safe & secure it will not cry. The crate gives the pup a quiet closed in "den" type place to help it feel secure. Just don't leave it in there for long periods of time without potty breaks & eating. If you cannot find the stuff animal I mentioned above, a small toy stuffed animal may help....

Puppy's cry. It is just a fact of life. There are a few things you can do. First off, do not reward the crying. If Puppy cries and you let Puppy out Puppy learns that crying works. Get a small travel alarm clock (one that ticks) to put in the crate with your puppy. You can get these at most superstores or at pet supply stores. Puppies do not have large bladders and need to be let out of their crate at least every 3-4 hours. A puppy in need will certainly cry. He doesn't want to mess where he sleeps. If you are going to be gone longer than that time get a friend or neighbor to come let him out to relieve himself. Good luck!

You might try a crate. My puppy would cry alot...my mom gave me an old "windup" type clock and we put it in the bed with the puppy and he fell right to sleep! It is supposed to simulate the mother's heartbeat and that is why he was comforted! You might try something like that...or maybe even getting an older dog to stay with him during the day or when you have to be out. Good luck...hang in there!

Some breeds of dogs are just prone to whining. The dog will eventually be used to you leaving. Its just a new phase for the puppy being away from mom or attention.

yes - your puppy is experiencing separation anxiety. one thing that may help is to give your puppy something to do while you're gone. get one of those Kong toys and put some peanut butter in it, so he'll have to work on licking it all out while you're gone. also, when you leave, don't make a big fuss about it - don't draw it out. just walk out. same thing when you come back in again - don't make a huge fuss.

also, start by leaving your dog alone for small time intervals, and work up to leaving him for longer time intervals. walk out of your house for maybe 1-2 minutes to start out with. leave without a fuss, then come back inside without a fuss. if he's crying when you leave, don't pay any attention to him. he'll eventually learn that you'll always come back, and his whining won't bring you back any sooner.

if this really gets to be a problem, ask your veterinarian if they know of any animal trainers or behaviorists in your area to help you out with your training.

and don't give the puppy milk. after a certain age, too much milk can make them really sick or kill them.

Wrap a clock in one of your shirts and leave it with him in his pen. He is insecure about being alone. It will pass in time. The clock simulates a beating heart, and the shirt will leave your scent there with him. You could also leave a tv or radio on in another room. Also make sure he has toys to keep him occupied.

Best of luck to you, and I hope the pup does well!

Get a wind up clock that ticks. The louder the tick tock the better.
Wrap the clock up in a blanket, & place it in the bed next to your pup.
The clocks rhythm simulates the beating of his moms heart, & will soothe him until he's older.
