I am a college student majoring in Sociology, so I have no background in teaching. Are there any good programs out there that would allow me to work for a few weeks or a month over the summer. I really want to do this in China or somewhere in Asia, although I am only just now beginning to study Mandarin Chinese.

There are a lot of English camps open during the summer. You may be able to find a job teaching at one of them. Check expat sites within China. There may be listings on there as it gets closer to the summer. There are also volunteer organizations that come over as a group to teach English for a few weeks during the summer. You don't always need teaching experience to get these jobs. Sometimes just being a native English speaker is enough. You can also check with Aston or English First to see if they are running any summer only hiring programs.

You don't need to speak much Chinese to get by in many Chinese cities. Keep in mind that they speak Cantonese in the South, not Mandarin. Also, some cities in China get very hot in the summer. The locals refer to them as "furnaces." If you have problems with heat you may want to avoid those cities. They have air conditioning in some places, but it's not central throughout the buildings.

I've been teaching in China for 4 years now and I didn't have any experience nor a TEFL/TESOL certificate when I started. The only teaching experience I had was giving talks about date rape, STIs, and relationship violence to college freashman. This is where expat sites come in handy. Many experienced teachers are willing to talk about what has worked for them in the Chinese classroom.

Good luck in coming to China.

Well,I don't have experience like that.
But I am a college student in China who had taken English lessons.Maybe you should try to contact some teachers after your arrival. There won't be only one foreign teacher in the college.

And,Chinese students may not be that active. You need some patients and preparation.

You may apply for some program as a tutor, not a college teacher so that you don't have to sign a long term contract

There are many websites that offers teaching job in China. Just type in google 'teaching in china' and you'll find many schools want to employ native speakers. Usually they will ask you to sign a 6 months contract. Salary range from 4000-10000 RMB, if you sign a year contract that includes a return ticket and all that depends on your qualification and also the city you choose.

When I taught in China I was sponsored by WorldTeach. They used to have a summer teaching program specifically geared towards American undergraduates.

Definitely check out their website to see if it is still operating (the rest of their programs are for college grads).

there are good programs available from anywhere from a couple of months to a year or more.
I know people who have gone with China Horizons, and they had a really good experience. I myself went with a different group and did not have as good as one.
