A really old remedy that works is to tie about a cup of oatmeal in a cloth and drop it into the baby's bath water. Let the baby sit in the water and play with the oatmeal cloth until the water turns a milky color. This helps heat rash, diaper rash, chicken pox rashes and doesn't hurt the baby at all. My mother, an American Indian who used all kinds of home remedies, raised four kids on oatmeal baths and now her children are doing the same with their kids.

Yes. Apparently you can give your 5 month old calamine lotion for heat rash. From what I just read, it's safe!

Most forms of prickly heat do not need any treatment. The rash goes away eventually. It is more important to try to keep the baby cool. If you choose to do something about the rash, simply try wiping off the skin with water and patting it dry. You can also pat the rash several times a day with a bicarbonate of soda solution (1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda to 1 cup water) on absorbent cotton. Another treatment is dusting with cornstarch powder.

I would use something for diaper rash, but I had a heat rash last week and the best thing that you can do to get rid of it is to make it cool and keep it dry. I wet it with cold water, then dried it, and then slept in front of the fan and it went away the next morning.

I would have to agree with Rita on this one. Mom used to tie oatmeal in a cheesecloth (plain but not instant) and draw up a bath of lukewarm water for all kinds of rashes when we were little, and for sunburn she would make oatmeal compresses. It soothes the irritated skin and won't hurt or harm your baby at all.

won't do any good best thing for a heat rash to leave it alone - maybe put powder but let it air out - no aloe or calamine or neospoine or vasaline gunk

I recommend just salve at first... calamine lotion may be too medicated for the boy's small body, contact your doctor or pharmacist before doing it.

My son is the same age and just yesterday his pediatrician prescribed OTC hydrocortizone -- either .05% or .1% if severe. She also recommended 1.5 ml of Children's Benedryl.
