labs are good with people and dogs and kids and if you train them they can be great. i wouldn't own one because they can be quite hyper and will eat anything. i work at a vet clinic and within the past 3 months we've has 4 labs that had to have exploratory surgery to remove a sock or a little stuffed animal from their intestines - its very expensive and life threatening. Rottweilers can also be great if trained properly, but i'm not great at training and without that and proper socialization they can be aggressive. My reccomendation if you want a bigger dog that is a great family dog, i would recommend a golden retreiver, they don't eat everything in sight that is non edible, not quite as hyper and far less likely to be aggressive, although they will still need puppy classes and training. hope this helps.

well, my sister has a rotti x lab. and she is one of the smartest most gentle, quiet and timid dogs Ive ever met. she has had no real training [bar yelling! :( ] yet, she is 13 years old, and is the most darling smart dog who has learnt commands and obeyed them so easily.
This dog is the same age as the German Shepherd I grew up with in my family home, and she is substantialy A LOT smarter, gentle & laid back than our Alsation.

Perhaps try to rescue one. There are PLENTY of purebred and crossbreed dogs in shelters needing new homes. and i know ive seen a lot or Rotti x and Lab x on my frequent pound visits.. who knows, perhaps you can find a cross of your two breeds and get the dog you want and save a life too! :)

OH AND - My sister also had two children in the last 4 years and her dog was NO problem. she is not only gentle to them, but even stays away from them quite a bit [the kids are only 4 and 2, so not yet into playing fetch etc.] and she lets them run amok and carry on and it doesnt stress her out or anything. she is really a great dog. she even puts up with my neice's attempts to 'play nice' which is climbing on top of the dog or pulling on her coat a bit. she seems to understand my neice is only a baby and isnt harming her.
Really the more i think about it the more i realise she has really been a great dog. especially considering she wouldve been around 9yrs of age when the children were born etc. some dogs might not take sharing their house hold too well at that age, but this dog was great. no probs at all!

GOODLUCK!

Generally the Labrador's demeanor is more gentler than most other dogs, but it's also how dogs are raised.
Also, the Lab is unsuspecting to the way they protect their loved ones. You don't often hear about Labs attacking people because the usually won't. But let a stranger bring fear to the loved ones, and said dog will let said stranger know how quickly he'd better move along. NOW!

There will probably be lots of people that disagree. But i have a rottweiler and hes great! He is the most loyal dog we have had and he loves kids! hes like a giant teddy bear but also a great guard dog.

Rottweillers have the second highest rate of serious dog bites in the nation after pit bulls. Labradors are way down the list. They were bred to soft bite game birds. So the answer is obvious.

Labs are known for being great family dogs. But, the old saying goes....if your dont kill your lab in the first 2 years, you will have a friend for life. They are notorious for chewing and digging. So be ready!

I adopted my dog from an animal shelter she is a mix rott/cattle dog and she is super good with kids, just make sure when you adopt from the pound see how the dog reacts to kids, some dogs have been abused and are not good with children. little dogs are also not very good with children. good luck.

its up to you, go and spend time with each dog and see how you feel. With the rottie, id be a bit cautous only on size, they would just brush past the kids and accidently knock them over.
