I'd say it is time to find a new dentist. Root canals can be tricky things and they should not be treated lightly. A root canal is delicate surgery and the entire process should be done with equipment so the dental surgeon can actually see the drill go into the tooth to the bottom of each and every root and sub root of the tooth. This is not a simple procedure as teeth come with various numbers of roots and sub roots that all need to be cleaned of tissue and filled.
If not you will have dead tissue still inside the tooth that has been exposed to all kinds of bacteria. Some of these sub roots can fester for years until finally the tooth will have to be removed. When initially if it had been done properly it should never ever become abscessed again because ideally there should be no tissue or space left inside the tooth to cause problems a second time.
Another important thing is to have the filling go all the way to the bottom and beyond a little to make sure there is no space left open inside the tooth because if that is not done proper that too will cause abscess.
For insurance purposes, I would talk to my current dentist and ask to be refered to a dentist who specializes in endodontics and one trip root canals. Sounds to me like you need a specialist. Look in the yellow pages for a dentist who practices endodontics before asking your dentist for a referal if he hesitates tell him you know of one he can refer you to and give him the name and number. Good Luck!
