The best way is to prevent it. Make sure you're warmed-up before beginning the strength training portion of your workout. I always hop on the treadmill for 10 minutes at a fast walk, then I stretch all my muscle groups immediately afterwards. Another good thing to do is warm-up sets. For instance let's say you're doing dumbbell curls. You normally use 15 pounds, but for the warm-up you would use 5 pound weights. This way you muscles get prepared for the heavier weight.

Another key is to stay hydrated. If you get dehydrated, your muscles get tight, greatly increase the risk of pulling a muscle.

Just as important as the warm-up is the cool-down. After your workout you should stretch again. You could also put in some more time on the cardio equipment before the final stretch.

If you've done all that stuff already, take some time off to let your muscles heal. Hot tubs are fantasic, too. Seeing a massage therapist is another great thing to do even you aren't sore.

Be sure you're getting enough protein and carbs after your workout for sure. Take a hot bath or shower, that really helps achiness. Also, be sure you're drinking enough water. Stretching always helps with soreness too. If you're still sore, maybe you're working out too hard? There is such a thing as overtraining. As a last resort, once in a while a couple of advil does the trick if you're particularly sore.

There are many rubs and linaments which you can purchase at Drug Stores.
However I suggest that you do not go at it so hard. Start out slow and when you feel the muscles starting to complain stop, then gradually you can increase whatever it is that you are doing. The Bible says Patience is a Virtue, which many people today do not have,as we live in an instant society.

Believe it or not water! I drink 2 gallons of water per day and when I am sore, water really cushions the pain. Instead of being out a week or more due to pain, I am out for only one day. Water is a godsend!

Continue with the practice. If unbearable, still continue but might reduce the pace.
