I am 21, and about 7 months ago i moved out of my parents, and into an apartment with my boyfriend. Ever since i was little i have wanted a dog. But my parents are very anti animal, but especially anti dog, so i never got a dog of my own. So i started out by walking dogs and dog sitting for neighbors. Moved to volunteering at an animal shelter, and i now work at a veterinary clinic. I work with dogs everyday, and i have done research on dogs since i was in middle school. So now that i am on my own, and am sure i can afford a dog, i REALLY want one. It has gotten to the point that i don't feel i can go any longer without one. The only problem is that i am in love with the bully breed dogs. I really really love pit bulls. But my apartment has breed restrictions, and don't allow pit bulls, mastiffs, rotties, ect. and they named American Terriers. I am not sure what this means. I have 7 more months on the lease, and i can't wait that long to get my dog. I don't want to settle..........

for a dog that fits the requirements, i really want either a pit bull or american bulldog. So now i don't know what to do. Should i just wait out the 7 months with agony. Should i get a dog, like a boxer, that i really like...but they are not the breed i am truly passionate about. Or should i get a dog, call it a boxer mix, and hope for the best. I really want to just get a bully type mix, and call it a boxer mix. But i'm affraid that if they find out, they will send my dog back. I am having a really hard time with this. Waiting 21 years has been my limit. I can't wait any longer, and my boyfriend isn't helping me out with a solution. What would you DO????

I have an idea, so please read.

Wait the 7 months to own a dog. You know your mind, and know what you want. You won't be happy with anything else.

You sound like you will make a great dog owner.

BTW, those aren't *bully* breeds. They are just very strong dogs...and when strong dogs have bad owners..they get bad reps.

If you need a dog now...apply to a dog rescue group..to foster a dog. They are sincerely in need of people who can *foster* dogs.

You can take in a dog that your landlord will allow..help out a dog and rescue org, satisfy your need of having a dog now...and have more experience when it comes to getting your actual *forever* dog.

Good luck!

If you really want to get a dog then get a breed that is closest to the breeds you really like, I am sure you will enjoy any dog no matter what the breed but if you are into the pit bulls then find a dog that resembles it but not in the forbidden list. You could wait the 7 months and get what you want but there are lots of dogs out there looking for homes and you would love them too. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I can certainly understand your impatience. Dogs are wonderful!
I have a 9 year old pit who I love to pieces!! He is the most gentle, goofy, loving dog I have ever known. I understand how you feel about the breed. That being said, I would wait if I were you until your lease was up. You'll be happier in the long run if this is the dog you want.
Keep your eye out for a pit who needs a home. There are so many who end up in the hands of owners who decide to give them up for one reason or another. Then they go to the shelters and are euthanized. So unfair!
I commend you on your volunteering at the shelter, keep it up! Sounds like you are a very kind person. Any pit bull would be lucky to live with you.

The question isn't waiting until the lease is up, it is where you are going to live. If you get the dog you are out on the street and finding a new place you will find the same restrictions. So you and the dog will be living in your car. What you want comes with many restrictions. You have to weigh your love for the bully breeds to the restrictions you will find in housing, public acceptance and even the ability to get insurance for your home or apartment. Let's not even talk about your relationship with your parents if you get such a dog.

I'm not saying don't do it, just make a decision fully understanding the consequences and whether you can live with them.

DONT SETTLE!!

Wait -as hard as it may seem-to find a place that will accept the dog YOU want---while you wait do your research and find out WHO and WHERE accepts your beloved "bully" breeds...if you cannot find a place that doesnt accept them...never settle- a dog is a friend, a life and a responsibility, when the time is right you will be blessed with the pet of your dreams...do your research so there will be no disappoinments...till then just hold off no matter how hard it seems to wait...

I wouldn't settle though,,,dont get a pomeranian just because they are accepted...just wait---it will be worth it believe me...

just think how lucky you and your doggie will be once you have found each other....I suggest rescue as well--they are so greatful to have homes....

be blessed

Well, maybe you can "settle" for a breed you still like right now, and consider getting a second dog when you are able to move on to a place that will allow the breed you would like to have. It would be too risky to get the breed you want and hope that you don't get caught and then have to give it up or pay to end your lease so that you can move.

Why not just get a smaller dog. If you love dogs, you will be happy with another kind. Find one to adopt at the shelter.
