You have to realize he just got taken from his mom and when puppies sleep they sleep tight, & close so he is use to sleeping with a litter and his his mom, just give him lots of love and hold him close too and once he gets use to yor routine he'll be okay. I got a puppy @ 9 weeks and she only whined a little but she also slept in mom daughter's bed so let him sleep in your bed or put his bed in your room but he start feeling secure. I also did alot of research on my puppies breed and that helped as well. and about 6 weekd later bought another puppy and I can't tell you how much it helped to have him keep her company.

Dogs are pack animals, not meant to be alone. It goes against nature. Can you leave your dog with someone when you have to go away? Then slowly over time start leaving him alone a little here, a little there. Within a couple months leave him alone for the day. But if possible only a couple times a week. Gradually build up to more time.

Take him out for at least twenty minutes of rigorous exercise in the morning and evening to stave off depression.

Leave the TV on when he's alone so he feels like someone's there. Good luck! I love Basset Hounds!

There are toys that dispense food as the pup plays with them. Get a few of each kind. And get a few different kinds.
(ex: get 3-4 blue round ones, and 3-4 pink square ones, what ever you can find.)
Then, fill and put out all the ones of the same kind. That way, the food will last all day. When he gets the idea, start hiding the toys for him to find as an added game for him.

HE ONLY GETS THESE TOYS WHEN YOU LEAVE!!!
If he can have them anytime, he won't look forward to playing with them, and they will quit working.

When you come home, ignore him. For 10-15 minutes don't talk to him, don't look at him, nothing. If you pay attention to the freaked out behavior, it will continue.

Keep in mind that he probably settles down once you leave. Try not to worry.

well he is only 9 weeks old. Hes just come to a new home that he isnt use to and is trying to settle in. So it will cry when you do leave. What I did with my groodle who is now 6mths, was put a ticking clock under its pillow of its bed, and also practice through the day leaving him for a few mins then returning, then gradually increase the time.

Getting a fav treat can also help, but you dont want to fall into the trap of having to him food to stop him crying.

Hope all goes well.

It could be natural.. but maybe he seems attached to you and see's you as his mother not in a funny way X__X but it might be more serious if he does it only to you...
