good question! Well.... if you are painfully shy, there is only one thing you can do, try as hard as you can to move away from it. You can't expect to be social life of the party over night, but consider making achievable goals.

Goal 1: Say hi to five people throughout the day, whether in the hall at work, on the bus, at a restaurant.

Goal 2: Go out to a social event, a club, bar, art show, concert, symphony.

Goal 3: Go to a mall, stop in at 10 stores, ask for help from an employee at each store, this will allow you to speak to a total stranger, and help you realize it isn't that bad.

the best way to get over your fear is to face it. next time you meet guy shut off over that fear of embarrasment or of blushing and ask him out/befriend him/tell him how you feel. next time you get to meet new people think to yourself that they are just as shy to meet new people as you are. and think of all the great times you'll have in the future with this new friends. the thing about shyness is that we think more about the negative stuff than the positive, sometimes subconciously. and that keeps us from being all we can be and taking more risks. the more positive outlook you have on things then less shy you'll be about things in general in the future.

Go out and have a couple of drinks, mingle and unwind. Join a gym, attend a social event of interest, you'll eventually meet people with the same commonality and feel comfortable conversing with (it'll happen naturally, you'll be in your comfort zone).

Find someone who will agree to join you in purposefully doing something that attracts attention to you and is perhaps a little embarrassing. Do it repeatedly. It will clarify myths that may be buried in your head about what bad things might happen if you are in a humiliating situation.
