If you accidentally added too much salt to a pot of soup, peel a potato and put the whole thing in the pot and continue to cook, the potato will absorb some of the extra salt. A little sugar can help. If all else fails, double the rest of the ingredients, and you'll end up with a lot more food and it will be less salty, just make sure you're not adding more salt. I know, it's a Captain Obvious statment, but you just never know anymore! Hope this helped and have a great rest of the week!

I don't think you can do anything to an actual serving of food on your plate except maybe add more food. But if you are cooking a dish, like soup or something with a gravy, you can put a chunk of potato in there. That will absorb some of the salt.

I have actually done this with the dressing for Thanksgiving, quite a large pan I might add. I peeled about 3-4 small potatoes and placed them in the dressing whole. Bake as usual. Remove the potatoes before serving. They will pull most of the salt out.

Pepper is good, or even paprika or another mixed spice - although with the latter check for salt first. A bit of garlic gives flavour also if looking for an alternative to salt - fresh or minced garlic, not garlic salt. Also look for salt reduced butter/margarine and sauces to help reduce salt intake.

I also eat far too much salt. - I (normally) cook STIR FRY dishes which, by nutritive value contains over 30 times too much salt.
What I have changed in my diet is using a LOW SODIUM version of "common table salts."
Many of these "cheating" salts do harbor a different seasoning that masks the added chlorine to make up for the lowered sodium level.
I have a preference for the ONION SALT version.

To fix a sauce or soup that has too much salt, for example, add a dash of sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Do you mean that you consume too much salt? If you are consuming too much salt and wish to stop the habit, try adding garlic powder and onion powder as flavoring instead. It really does help to break the habit.
