I've been having a lot of trouble falling asleep for the past couple months. It seems I'm incapable of falling asleep before 2 or 3am, but I have to be up for classes at 8 am. I end up being exhausted all morning, then take a nap in the afternoon some days. Whether I take a nap or not though, I still don't fall asleep until very late. Anyone have any tips on falling asleep, or getting a better night's rest?

Whatever you do, don't take any drugs. They will further destroy your sleep pattern. The best thing you can do for yourself is to make a decision that you will not get frustrated or upset no matter how bad your sleep is, because doing so will only stress you out more than anything. Secondly, exercise a LOT during the day (but not for 2-3 hours before sleep). Try to meditate for 20 minutes before sleep.

And just accept that sometimes life deals us some hands we don't prefer, but they are always temporary. I was in your exact situation for a long time, but it went away.

A lot of things contribute to sleeping difficulties. Diet, physical activities, stress level, and medical treatment being undergone, to name a few. What you can try is this:

To do before you sleep:
- Do not consume cafeine before sleeping.
- Be in bed at 10 pm at the latest. Studies shows that sleep quality falls if you sleep too late in the night. Even though you 'redeem' your sleep during the day, it won't help.
- Stop thinking about the problems you had during the the day.
- Try to relax all your muscle.
- If you're lucky and you live in a quiet neighborhood, try to listen to the sound of the night.

To do during the day:
- Avoid sleeping during the day. A short 15-30 minute nap is OK, but more than that is inviting trouble.
- If possible, do some exercise. Take a walk or jog in the park or in the neighborhood, or try to do some cleaning around the house.
- Consume normal amount of cafeine during the day, if you are in the habit. The normal amount is between 1-6 cups of coffee, depending on the kind of coffee you drink.
- Have a positive attitude toward problems. This can help reduce your stress level, and give you better sleep at night.
- Make sure you have a dose of laughter everyday. This will help you relax.

I guess that's about it. Have a good night's sleep!

Well sleep is a big subject and there are many causes for insomnia. Stress, physical discomfort, bad sleep habits, caffiene intake. Cola, chocolate, etc. Diet products. all these can cause insomnia. there are a number of things you can do, hot milk to release the chemical that helps you sleep, avoid caffiene in cola ,coffee, chocolate after a certain time of day , like no caffiene after 3PM or something.. Make your environment as conducive to sleeping as possible, pale, soft colors in the bedroom, nothing real busy looking, reduce noise around you, if you can't, get ear plugs , or get something like a machine that makes a sound you find soothing. Some people like the sound of rain for example. condition yourself to think of nothing you find stressful before bed, think of a place you found very safe as a child and picture your self there. do something you find relaxing before bed even if only for a short while. You could try over the counter benadryl 25 to 50 mg is good, take about 15 minutes before bed with the milk if possible. But try not to rely on meds, benadryl is not addictive, but natural sleep is always more restful. Last thing, set a schedule and don't vary from it by taking a nap, screws up your sleep clock. Insomnia was something I struggled with. Good Luck !! P.S. If nothing works , get a sleep study done, you might have a medical condition that interferes with sleeping , like sleep apnea. It deprives the body of oxygen and causes constant waking up at night and insomnia and a person always feels tired.

well you could try like tylenol pm or something along that line...i have the same problem...some of the pm pills seem to help without the weird feelings in the morning or without still being tired. you might have to go to the doctor and explain your problem. there might be some underlying reason.

try not to sleep during the day. if u dont want to take pills for it try this: when u lay down clear ur head of all thoughts and breath in thru ur nose and out ur mouth and consentrate on doing this. if ur mind starts to wonder off just clear ur head again, keep breathing and concentrate again on ur breathing. this works for me unless i took a nap and then i have to take some thing to help me sleep. good luck!
