So, I am currently forming details for a story, a modern day story, and I have three gun wielding characters, one of which is a bodyguard who carries a pistol on him at all times. For those gun junkies out there, can anyone give me the name of a particular pistol, caliber and all, that you think would be best suited for such a character, and maybe give me some reasons why? (If not, I'll research it myself.) Some good reliable pistols would be nice, and the more modern they are, the better. Thanks guys! I really appreciate it.

Some of the people who answered this don't know what they are talking about. A full time bodyguard who carries a pistol every day is not going to lug around a hand cannon or other "spray and pray" machine gun. He or she is going to look for something reliable, concealable, and easy to maintain. The question was about pistols I believe, and in that vein I would look into the following:

Glock 19 - functional, reliable, easily concealable, with a high magazine capacity and decent stopping power. The ammo is available world wide and the gun goes bang every time you pull the trigger, no matter how badly you treat it. Someone who trusts his life to a pistol is going to pick something functional over something "sexy or cool" every time. A bonus for the book character is that readers will be familiar with the gun because of its prominence in movies and TV.

Heckler and Koch USP in 9mm- more expensive than the Glock, but one of the best guns on the market. Heckler and Koch has contracts with most special forces groups in the world for a reason. (See Tom Cruises' character in Collateral)

Both of these guns would be practical and realistic for an everyday bodyguard. The calibers of course could be changed, and I would argue that most shooters would pick the .40 S&W or the .45 ACP calibers over the 9mm for stopping power. Now, sub-machine guns or other long guns would take us down a whole new road, but I believe the question focused on pistols. My two cents.

Go "old school" and have your character carry a Browning Hi-Power. It is a single action, hi-capacity (14 rds. standard or 17 rds. when using South African mags), that is very reliable, accurate, and easy to maintain in the field.
The 9MM Hi-Power is a combat proven veteran of every major conflict from WW2 to the present, and is commonly found in the hands of police, military, and mercenaries throughout the world. If your character travels a lot and can't smuggle a handgun through customs of a particular country, chances are he will be able to find his "favorite choice" on the local black market for a reasonable price, you could even work that into the story somehow. Talking from experience, you wouldn't be able to find a Desert Eagle or some other "modern" handgun on the black market for a reasonable price- if you could find them at all.
Something else with your character, BE REALISTIC!!! Anybody that knows handguns will tell you that the Desert Eagle .50 (or any other large frame handgun/cannon) is a bulky, un-concealable, cumbersome boat anchor, no professional bodyguard in his right mind would be caught dead using one (except "Hollywood" professionals and one particular dimwit posting an answer to your question). The Desert Eagle would be impractical and a very poor choice as .50 ammo is damn near impossible to find outside the U.S. where most bodyguard work is done, and follow up shots are impossible because the damn thing kicks like a mule!!

Due to it's 18 round 9mm mag the Glock 17 is an excellent choice, the Mini Uzi SMG is also a great choice due to it's high cyclic rate of fire as well as the HK MP5k because they are fast, easy to control and fairly easy to conceal. The best of all possible choices however is probably the YATI 9mm x 19 with a fast cyclic rate, decent muzzle energy and control characteristics, 20 or 40 round mags and folding front cocking lever/hand grip making it the most concealable and easy to fire from a suit jacket or briefcase.

Well believe it or not I am a gun owner and I have read a good deal of book along the lines of what your describing. I would say a modern bodyguard would most likely carey something relabel and inconspicuous. A snub nose .38 or 357MAG revolver or a compact 9mm.

Smith and wesson model 29 in .44 magnum caliber (Dirty Harrys weapon of choice). Smith and Wesson model 28 "highway patrolman" in .357 caliber. Ruger P-95 in .45 caliber. Browning "Hi Power" in 9MM caliber. and the Good Old Colt Government model 1911 in .45 caliber. To hell with all those new fangled calibers like .40 S&W who needs em? the only new one I'd trust is the Beretta S92 in 9MM.

How about Dirty Harry's favorite?

"Clint Eastwood (Harry Callahan): I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?

I would have to say a Kimber Custom Special .45. They have night sights, and very little kick for a .45. They are fairly concealable, and have specialized grips.
Taurus also is making a good name for themselves these days, and is a little more cost effective, although larger.
