I have a 1.5 year old puppy. She is very hyper and likes to jump on people, which I have scolded her for many times. She just loves new people. She is usually very calm when it is just me and my fiance, but I am afraid she will jump on our baby, who is due in August. Is their any way to prepare my puppy for a new baby? I know to bring home a blanket, or clothing from the hospital with the baby's scent, but I don't think that will be enough for my puppy.

I am not an expert, but I would suggest buying a doll baby that looks like an infant and carrying it around, rocking it, changing it, etc.

It may take a bit of work, but the puppy would be accustomed to these activities and it won't be as much of a shock for the puppy to adapt.

Have a happy baby!!

You may be suprised at how the puppy acts with the baby. Keep in mind too that by then the puppy will be about 2 yrs old and will probably have calmed down a little more. Just take precautions and do your best to keep the baby where the pup doesn't jump on it. When you bring the baby home, let the pup smell the baby and praise her when she is good. Make sure that you give the pup the same attention she normally gets or she may feel left out.

Congrats on the baby and good luck with the pup

My last shepherd was really hyper, my mother joked she needed Ritalin. All of my friends thought we would never make it with her and a new baby, but we held the baby and let her sniff, under complete control of course, kept them separate and never had any problems. When my daughter started pulling up, if she would step on her, the dog made a little sound then just moved to another room. It was amazing how she just accepted my daughter. Sometimes keeping totally separated and removed creates more hyperness. Also, I would highly recommend a training course, even one on one with an experienced trainer as there might be something you are unintentially doing to encourage the hyperness, i.e. scolding is actually attention for the dog, there has to be some consequence. You are on the right track and so many families have dogs I know it will work out for you! Good Luck and enjoy the housefull!

My brother just had a baby with his girlfriend and their dog is a 2 year old Border Collie that is crazy for toys and affection. The baby came home and he didn't even really bat an eye because all he wanted was affection so one of them would give it to him. The dog eventually got used to the baby coming first, not him. Start weaning yourself from the dog by not getting up as soon as the dog wants out or fed or played with ect....that way it won't be such a shock when the baby comes and you don't give into the dog's needs first.

Good luck and congrats!

I would keep them separated at first, slowly introducing them - one person holding the dog, one holding the baby. We had a puppy that was about 8 months when our nephew came. He's very hyper, but recently has taken a huge liking to the baby. You might be surprised how gentle the dog will be if you give them time to adapt to each other.

Sounds like the dog needs some serious training. It would help as far as her accepting the baby if you had friends or relatives come over with a baby. Get her used to it. Tape the sound of a baby crying and play it for her every once in awhile so he gets used to it.

Lady- get your dog trained. It's completely undisciplined and that's why it jumps on people- because you let it!

Exercise your dog, train your dog: a tired dog is an easier to train dog which is a happy dog all around.

Set your limits!! Make sure your dog knows who's alpha boss in the house and you won't have as many problems.

11/2 is old to still be hyper dependent on breed. I would get her to a few classes.costly but can be well worth it.
