You've pretty much said it...Western art is in a confused state where anything goes. Some artists are combining a number of elements from earlier periods, others using found objects or graffiti, still others continues with the styles of the 1950s. No one style dominates much like the society as a whole. Our need for heroes, fads, and trends will pull us back into a main stream once we get passed the current mixing of ethnicities and backgrounds. A common agreeable "style" will emerge and we will then have some breakout movement to focus on. Meanwhile, why stress about it? Enjoy the vast production.

artistic movements are almost always named years after they happen. The renaissance was, so was the baroque (a "broken" version of the renaissance). It goes on, and on, and on in the same vein. Cubism was originally an insult, but came about drring the period. The first to actually name their own movement was the Dadaist ("rocking horse"), which purposely made no sense. I think today, everyone wants to define themselves in their own niche, kind of like how emo and techno bands each creat their own genre. I think one has to be able to look at the trends of years past in order to create a collective thought that was resonating through artistic works of a certain period. All the movements going on currently are reffered to as "contemporary" while modern art is actually from ww2 to about the 70s. Pop art and everything after, for the most part is considered "post-modern".

Just in case any other artist feels like pointing out the obvious, yes this is a gross simplification

I think that there is a revival of classicism these days in opposition of the low standards in art for many decades. It's pretty strong from what I see.

I'm sure it won't be long until there is a new movement that's strongly for classical art. And maybe even by a rather young group of artists.

The latest art movement is a revival of Classical Realism Academic drawing and painting. There is a return to valuing the skills of the great master in history. This article link is about one of the painters and teachers in the vangaurd of the movement and is very informative.
