The one who lists the most reasons (each one distinct) for two people to become married will get the 10 points.

(I'm asking this in R&S because I have frequently seen it said that marriage is a religious institution. However, I'm curious how many reasons for marriage are actually secular rather than religious, even among those who are believers.)

Soulful Kris: $1 hardly amounts to a reason to get married. It's not even enough to buy a wedding muffin. However, your wife's fortune can count as one reason. Keep going, if you like.

love
commitment
support
trust
you want a family with this person
monetary reasons (unfortunately it's true for many)
he's your best friend
the other person just makes you happy
he makes you laugh
to escape your parent's house (again, it's sad but true)
you can't imagine your life without this other person
you're gay and you want to piss people off (my daughter's answer because she thinks that's funny)
you feel obligated
it's an arranged marriage
a spiritual connection

OK. I think I'm done.

1 taxes 2 getting 3 visiting rights in hospitals 4 not having old people ask you why you're not married 5 easier to get money loans6people in general treat you differently 6 people are less likely to hit on you or your spouse 7 love(although you don't necessarily have to have it to get married or don't have it if you're not) 8 if you're religious... so you can have sex 9 if you have children you have rights over them 10 the wedding gifts 11for the sad people... so you don't feel lonely 12 security 13 to have someone do the things for you you can't do (cheesy) 14 uh... because god says to 15 because the other person have a great dvd collection and now they're partly yours

well, obviously if you love that person you want a proper bonding.

you want to procreate with the person and have the children born and raised within a holy bonded relationship.

being alone, especially when you get old, sucks big time.

2 people can sure as heck handle the financial load better than one. But, I suppose you can do that as an unmarried couple.

To avoid the fornication thing.

You want to know that the other person is truly yours and not some random living arrangement or dating thing.

Hmm...
Love
Governmental monetary benefits
creating a contract of fidelity
going along with societal norms
having the big party
making your parents happy
keeping the diamond industry in business (joke...kinda)
avoiding having children out of wedlock...but that's pretty religious.

a really big way to show someone you care for them. I think weddings are really sweet, because as a species bio engineered to be promiscuous and unfaithful, when people take an oath to be only with each other it's a big deal.

The reasons to marry are to:

Make it easy er to give all you have to someone you love.
Show others this one is mine.
It's easy er to go to parties that involve relatives as a married couple.
It's accepted to have children.
You want to let this person you love know you will never stop loving them
And the big one. .. you can claim married on taxes..
