File extensions are usually 3-4 characters that are (delimited) separated from the name of the file by a '.' and indicate the associated program used to open that file.

Examples:
.ppt Powerpoint Presentation
.doc Document (Word)
.htm (or)
.html HyperText Markup Language

The .exe is an 'executable' program, which means that it has lines of code in it that triggers one or more procedures, which can be programs or actions... think about what a 'setup.exe' file does for example.

If it comes as an unrelated and unasked for attachment in an email, it would not be smart to run it. But extensions can be dropped to hidden too.

All these people that are saying it is a virus are a little simple-minded.

That is like saying a hammers is a weapon. Just because one idiot decides to bust a skull with it, doesn't make it a homicide weapon. It's primarily a tool with a normal function.

A virus don't open!!!! It means the file can be executed at any time without your knowledge until it is too late. If you have virus protection try to delete or quarntine the virus. Otherwise if you have a firewall go to options and try blocking the file. In any case though it should be removed permanantly from your system.

Any file with the extension *.exe is an executable file. In other words a program. If this came from an unknown source (or even a know one)... there's a good chance you just initiated a virus on your computer. SCAN YOUR HARD DRIVE NOW!

Good luck......

An .exe file is the extension of an "executable"

This means it is the main executable file that starts the program.

for example to install windows you would double-click on the file "setup.exe" note the .exe

be carefull downloading .exe files because they are files that run intantly, and if its a virus, it may not show anything but it may install the virus when you run it.

Especially something named Body.exe is very suspect.

I would run a virus scanner on your pc, to see if you were infected.

.exe stands for executable file. It is basically a program that interprets data and is formatted to look more appealing to you. For example: your web browser is .exe format. If it wasn't you would just see a bunch of words all smooshed together. But if it won't let you launch the file (Firewall, Spyware Remover, Spam Blocker) then don't because it most likely contains a virus.

.exe are executable files. Many programs you run (ie: microsoft word) are executable files, with the extension .exe (ie: microsoftword.exe).

hmmm, you should not have just opened the file. Virus check your computer now.

There used to be a program out there that when opened didn't do anything but it gave others access to your computer.
Be careful nexttime.
