away and the person is kind of pessemistic, but not morbidly depressed like they were. They tried a few antidepressents, and nothing really made much of a difference. Is it likely they will experience something similar in the future? I would say, for about a year or so they have been fine.

They never really seem to be manic though. Even when they aren't morbidly depressed, they're still kind of pessimistic and sluggish, but able to function.

They have been under professional care and are doing better now. Seasonal Affective Disorder sounds more likely than bipolar since they've never had a manic or hypomanic episode. Never had insomnia, agitation, irritability etc. If anything, I'd say they sleep too much even when they are not depressed.

Being evaluated by a professional is always the best answer. There could be several reasons a person would experience such symptoms. Bipolar disorder is a possibility, and there is also a condition known as dysthymia, which is a mild form of depression. Statistically, it is very likely that a person who suffers from depression will experience it again in the future, especially if the condition goes untreated.

I think this person needs to still be in treatment and get a right diagnosis. It sounds like bi-polar II , the person could be bi-polar, but never really gets manic, it goes from depressed to agitated, restless, sometimes insomnia or sleeping too much. Advise them to keep seeking help and bi-polar or depression is a recurrant problem, but manageable with the right meds. There can be periods of remission sometimes but they are more vulnerable to stress which could set off an episode as well as over the counter medication and alcohol. Good Luck!!

It would likely be 1 of 2 things - SAD a seasonal disorder that seems to come from winter & the lack of sunlight, or bi polar - you could go for years and never have a manic phase. Many people only have 1 manic phase or 1 depressed phase. They do not know why & the depessed & manic do not have to be a constant - there are times that are just "normal" whatever "normal" is. This is why they make pychiatrist.

thats just the way some types of depression is. i was told i was manic depressive, dont ask me the diff between the types cuz im not really sure, but i tried just about every medicine out there and nothing really help but i didnt take them very long so that may have been the reason. it takes about 8 weeks or more for the meds to kick in and start working. the best thing would be to go to a dr and or therapist and get tested. good luck.

It could be Seasonal Affective Disorder. Easily remedied by getting enough sunlight (at least 8 hrs), go to bed and wake up at the same time every day all year round.....Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, also known as winter depression is an affective, or mood, disorder. Most SAD sufferers experience normal mental health throughout most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms in the winter or summer: FOR A NATURAL REMEDY TRY B COMPLEX VITAMINS AND MELATONIN. THE B SHOULD HELP YOUR ENERGY LEVELS AND THE MELATONIN PROMOTES NATURAL SLEEP HABITS.

How long did they try the meds and who prescribed them? A family doctor may not be the best source of information here. Have them see a specialist who can work of finding the proper dosage level. Medications do work, but they take time. Recovery is a process, not an event. And medication without therapy is not effective either. Get to a mental health professional that can give this person the proper information about what they need to assist with this situation

if the person in question has seasonal affective disorder, their depression could be linked to the weather and tends to sway from week to week. another thing to pay attention to is if they're taking the anti-depressants as recommended and on a regular basis. often times, depressives begin to think that they can handle depression on their own, and go off the meds... also, different meds work differently. don't give up on trying to find the right one... there are tons out there.
