It depends on how dark your hair is to start with and how light a red you use. If using a lighter or brighter red, your hair will require more lightening in order to take the color. When the red washes out, it will leave your hair a medium/ash brown. Darker reds will fade to a dark/medium auburn. It will also depend what tone of red you are using (copper, brown, orange...) Red fades faster than any other color but using cold water and a good conditioner will help retain some of the color. Good luck.

It depends on the level of red you color to. If you add color to naurally dark hair, it usually fades out with no difference. If you add a red that is lighter than your natural color, it usually fades to an undesirable tone. Using a shampoo with a red additive can sustain between colorings once the original color starts to fade. If it is a red highlight, using the shampoo will tint red all over.

Usually it will fade to a redish brown and then back to your natural color.
