I'm a jazz singer/performer for 27 years, I'm 40 something with a professionally trained and powerful voice my entire life. In the last few months my voice has been failing and I've completely refrained from singing because of it. I can barely talk anymore. I've been to the doctor with no success. I've been tested for allergies which was negative but used the medication anyways with no results. He then said that I might have stomach acid problems but I've been through all of the medicines and sleeping upright and all of that stuff to no avail. I've never had any acid indigestion either. They've also checked for the legendary "nodes" but there's nothing except my inflamed vocal chords.

Any ideas out there???

Yes! I have been in your predicament and I didn't have acid reflux etc. either. It was inflamed vocal chords and I couldn't even read out loud very long before going hoarse.

What helped me -- wonderfully -- was Brett Manning's Singing Success series. The vocal exercises -- many of them very silly sounding -- totally changed my voice back to normal and then some. You can use the series to improve your voice (it really does) but I use it for my vocal chords. My vocal range has increased a couple of octaves painlessly as a result.

Brett Manning also carries herbal remedies for singers, plus tells you which foods are no-no's for singers. Check out the entire website. It isn't hype, and I have no dealings with Brett other than the home program. I don't know Brett personally and I'm not making any money by this referral. No joshing, this WORKS.

I used to lose my voice for long periods of time. Nobody could really figure it out till I went to one smart doctor at Kaiser. He said there was some theory that herpes simplex virus (that causes cold sores, for example) in some people attacks the nerve endings in the face and throat, tending to make one side of the face more sensitive than the other, and tending to paralyze the vocal chords so that they could not speak clearly. He gave me a prescription for prednisone for one week and the problem completely disappeared. You might want to suggest it to a doctor. Prednisone is a very powerful medicine, and some doctors are reluctant these days to prescribe it. But it helps many conditions.

Maybe you damaged your voice for good. (not to be negitive or nasty) it does happen...

My neighbors boyfriend used to be a singer, then out of the blue his voice went...and now he can barely talk and can no longer sing. (he didn't do anything..it was just too much I guess...)

My husband damaged his vocal chords in an accident ( had his throat cut by some wood) he can't sing, his voice has no highs or lows..he sounds like he has a cold all the time...Drs couldn't do a thing to help him, then (when it happened) or now...

Have you been to an ENT ???

I'm sorry...I've always wanted to sing...(but I can't....)

Try drinking hot water or milk (I know it sounds nasty but it works) Eat foods with ginger because it speeds up digestion. Yogurt also helps you digest. See if this works. Don't eat anything cold. it could cause the problem to worsen.
