Saliva is your first line of defense against decay and gum disease. When you fall asleep, saliva production decreases significantly. For this reason, you should brush your teeth BEFORE you take a nap to remove disease-causing bacteria from your teeth and gums, especially if you have a history of cavities and gingivitis or periodontitis.

You should brush after eating if possible as the damage occurs within the first 15 minutes following eating. But it would be good to brush after sleeping to "slay the dragon breath".
