I'm getting ready for my wedding. I've got a great mermaid styled gown here:

and they suggested both cloths. What's the difference and which is more pricey than the other? Which will justify the dress?

Silk is usually more expensive. It might be a little less shiny. Usually companies will provide fabric samples, if you ask. That way you can see and feel the difference. It's a pretty dress!

Silk Duchess Satin

WOW - georgeous gown - understated & elegant.

Duchess satin- is usually a fairly heavy solid fabric with a dull sheen - this gown would look AWESOME in that fabric

silk taffetta would be a bit softer & maybe have a ''rustling sound'' when you walk -
as someone else suggested - the silk would probably be more expensive & do get some samples from a fabric shop.
Duchess satin is usually 150cm wide
I think the silk would only be 115cm wide - so you would need more of it
for the skirt of your gown to sit out the way it is pictured it would need to be backed with some stiffening

CONGRATULATIONS & GOOD LUCK
