Would anyone know where I can go to find out police procedure in the 40's? One of the things I'm looking for, is what would a officer do if they found a man sleeping naked in a alley, and when they try to question him, he is drunk or unintelligable?

okay, I feed that I have to clarify my question. I'm writing a novel, my main character wakes up naked in an alley, he's suffering from a very bad case of amnesia, he cannot remember any of his past. I am trying to find out what would the police do if something like this actually happened. I'm trying to be as realistic as possible. The novels set in Detroit, Michigan in 1946. Sorry I should have clarified earlier.

Well, you're a little before my time. . .

Police in the 40's had a great deal of leeway in handling problems on their beat. I remember some of the old timers talking about incidents of this type, years ago. In most cases a naked drunk would probably be arrested, allowed to sleep it off in the drunk tank and sent home the next day. The officer MIGHT try to find out why he wound up naked in a alley or he might not.

Today, the man would be taken to a hospital for an examination for possible injuries. There would be an investigation into why he wound up the way he did. If it turned out that he just got too drunk, he would be charged and go to court.

You got a family scandal you are checking into?????

Naked man in an alley?? I don't even want to know what made you think this one up. Actually, he would get arrested for "Assault with a DEAD weapon. But I doubt if it would stand up in a court of law. Glad I could help.

The question is:

Does he appear to be a victim?

Or is it that he happen to fit the description of a criminal.

Either way, he will be brought back to a police instuition or a medical instuition first (if require immediate medical attention) ..... and interview will be conducted to ensure no breach of any law.

Depends on his answers. If he didn't responds or was unconscious he would be considered an aided case and sent to a hospital for observation.

If he was drunk, arrested.
