i had to buy a microsoft excel book for a class in school with a cd rom in the pack...they didnt have any new so i was forced to buy used and when i had to open a file i looked at the cd for the first time and its all scratched looking and im not sure if its a coincidence that my computer keeps having the 'program not responding' window come up or its the cd rom making it do that because its unreadable or something but, does anyone know how to get rid of the scratches? its just a cd rom that im gonna sell back to the school so hopefully its an inexpensive way. i tried rubbing it with a soft cloth by the way, and it still doesnt work.

I have been told, but never tried, peanut butter. You rub the CD with a soft cloth dipped in PB .. Rub in straight radial strokes..not circles. Then wash the CD with warm (not hot) water, dry it with the same kind of strokes and soft cloth.
Good Luck...HOPE IT WORKS

A useful substance to use to clean and remove scratches from a disc is a brass cleaning product called "Brasso". It comes in a small can, available in most hardware stores. First clean the CD with dish soap and warm water under the faucet. Rinse thoroughly, and then dry with tissue paper. (NOT PAPER TOWELS).
Once the disc is dry and clean, apply a dab of the Brasso to a clean soft cloth (an old tee shirt works well), and apply the Brasso to the disc from the hole out to the rim....NOT in a circular manner. Rub the Brasso in thoroughly, and then take a clean portion of the cloth and polish the disc to get it nice and shiny again. Do this in the same way you applied the Brasso....from the hole out toward the rim. Now try the CD. That technique will often do the trick. Good luck.

In most department stores like Walmart, were they sell CD Rs, you can buy a scratch removal device. Prices vary, and the results, depends on how bad the scratch is. You can try copying the whole CD to your computer, then burning it to a CD. Best of luck.

My opinion: If you had to buy a book and CD for a class, the school is responsible for giving you a CD in good order.
