i've been intrested in this for awhile now... i want to replace my 3.9 v6 with the 5.2L or maybe even the 5.9L. i know i'd have to redo all the exhaust and everything but will the stock automatic (w/ overdirve) transmission be able to handle the 5.2 or 5.9? if i do this... assuming that the tranny can handle the hp and tq, what else would i have to modify?

Check out some Dodge Dakota forums, there have been posts on these of what is needed to do this.

The 5.2 and 5.9 will mount right up. Just with the 5.9 you are gonna need some sort of stabilizer up front since the engine weighs more. Your also gonna need a wiring harness off of a 5.2 or 5.9 depending on what you get. You'll need the PCM off the same year vehicle also. Then you will also need a new trans pretty soon. You will shred your current one if you run it too long. It seems easy, but from what I have read, it can be kinda hard if you don't know what you are doing.
I was thinking about doing this to my 98 3.9 but then I thought about it, and to save the hassle I went out and just bought a 2003 Dodge Dakota R/T and have never looked back. Besides it being a BIG gas hog, I LOVE IT. Just look around for dakota sites and you can find what you need.

the trany should work but i dont think it will hold up with the added horse power. You'll need a new pcm (computer). everything else is more or less a swap. the computer is the big thing that will be all different
all this was based on the 5.2L if you go with the 5.9 you'll need a new tranny.

I would get the 5.2 Liter V8 engine and I don't believe it would mess up your transmission at all, just keep it maintained and you'll be in good hands.
