Even better than the food network would be to find a friend or family member who knows how to cook. Ask them if they'd be willing to teach you how to make something...something that is simple and that your family will enjoy. once you get a few dishes under your belt that you feel solid in, you will be able to start improvising and creating your own meals.

If you don't have anyone to teach you, do watch cooking shows, but some of them could be overwhelming if you don't really cook. Also be sure that you move from tv to kitchen. If you could find a few dishes that are easy and tasty like maybe a pasta dish (this could be very simple and easy), a stir fry, etc...

If you get a cookbook, try to find one that has the basics..many have definitions in the front of the book and explain what different things mean and may have images of different cuts of food (julienne, e.g.).

good luck!

1st off, congratulations on the birth of your daughter - relax, she won't be eatting your cooking for many months.

2nd the suggestion to watch food network shows like semi-homemade and "how to boil water" is a good one

3rd keep it simple, don't try multiple courses, pick a single cooking method and get good at it - example: saute, baking, broiling, etc. - cook the main dish this way, use a mix for a side dish and microwave a frozen vegetable - nice, easy, balanced meals.

Cookbooks are hit or miss - avoid things like 30 minute meals - you will be frustrated as a) you can't make the meal in 30 minutes and b) the methods are more complicated and require a lot of multi-tasking - my wife's "30 minute meals" take 1-2 hours and she threw the book across the room (I am the cook in the family) You might want to get a cookbook that matches the style of food you wish to cook or that matches the food network shows you like.

Good luck, hang in there and "cheat" wherever you can with prepared ingredients - just watch the fat and salt content of these items.

Also, don't be afraid to order out. Or pick up a rotiserrie chicken and make a salad to go with it.

Watch the Cooking Channel ( Food TV). Especially shows like Semi-Homemade and 30 Minute Meals. They show you how to make easy dishes that are mostly pre-prepared foods. A few cans here with an original touch can be very easy and delicious.

Here's a recipe i love it's spicy though! well you can adjust how spicy you want it...you'll need 2-4 fully cooked boneless chicken breasts (just boile them in water and salt for about 20 min.), half of one small can of chipotle sauce, 2tlsp.of sour cream,
2 tlsp.mayonaise, a little onion, and 1 garlic.
Mix in blender everything except the chicken breasts. And just spread sauce over the breasts, put in 375 oven for 30 min. Buy uncle Ben's white rice, it cooks fast in microwave. Chicken will be ready when you slice a little bit and there's no pink inside. Spread rice on platter and the chicken on top. It's so yummy, and you can feed your baby the left over chicken stock and rice. Good luck , and don't give up, just keep cooking and trying recipes, you can costumize anything.

Steak- marinate it overnight with a packet that you mix with water. Set your oven to broil. season the steak with a steak seasoning you can buy. broil 5-7 min a side.
Fish- season with salt pepper and thyme. bake it until its all white or sear it in olive oil over medium heat.
Chicken- cover the meat with flour and cook it over med- high heat to brown the surface. pour in chicken stock and simmer for 20 minutes.

Add frozen veggies (heat in the microwave with a little water.
Add rice (esp yellow with half chicken stock half water)
Add a baked potato (boil it so you don't have to bake it as long)

All that takes 30 min or less. Pop the cork on that wine and your husband will wonder what you did with his wife.
