I'm in gr9. Like alot of kids, and adults, nowadays i use msn to chat with my friends. however, my mom has a rule that during the school week (mon-thurs) i can't go on msn. do you think that's fair? i almost never get homework and have nothing to do in the evenings. i'm at the point where my parents say i read too much, and i'm also not aloud to watch TV

i live in the middle of no where, ten mins from the nearest town. my parents know all my friends, having met them at sporting events and the times when they have come over to hang out. i talk only to people i know personally, no one else. and i happen to be a kid who actually enjoys reading.

I think is fair. Be thankful you don't live in our home. I have 3 girls all younger then you, but will never be allowed to chat On line, Unless they are friends (only girls), and their dad or I have met them. I know we are kind of strict, lol.
Your mom loves you, and is just trying to keep you safe.
Good Luck

It certainly seems unfair, but I think I know why your parents are trying to prevent you from chatting on msn.

1) There are so many pedophiles out there is sick. They prey on women of all ages, and since you are under their care, they are trying to prevent something bad from happening. I am sure you are a responsible person, but parents always worry about this stuff.

2) They are probably trying to deter you from becoming a computer chatting geek. Believe it or not, the internet can become quite addictive and pretty soon you might rather chat than eat, sleep, do homework etc. Also they are trying to set boundaries so you can have some structure.

I think a good solution is to perhaps talk to them about a compromise - maybe you could pick up extra chores to get 30 min a day online, or maybe 1 day (like say Wednesday). Try it, you never know. I recall when I was in 9th grade my Dad refused to let me watch 'Friends' - yeah I know! Crazy right? But he said they talked about sex too much, but I already knew all about that. The compromise was that I wouldnt watch any other TV show but that. It was my fav show and I would rather give up all other programs than give that up.

Try to compromise - good luck. If no luck, just countdown until you can go away to college ;)

CAN'T read what? Your mom should do what I used to do. Make YOUR house be the one everyone comes to. Then Ya''ll can hang out there, talk in person, and have no need for TV or computer chat during those times. It's about time mom's start being active in their kid's lives. I completely think your mom doesn't want to be bothered by your teen life at all. Tell her to wake up and smell the coffee. She can't tell you that you can't "do" anything and yet ignore you like a forgotten dog in the back yard. Pretty strong, I know but, true of soooooo many mom's now-a-days.

Definitely obey your parents but if you feel you have an open line of communication perhaps you could work out another arrangement. Like maybe and hour or so on chat and then do some things that they would like to see you doing as well. A little compromise goes a long way!!

Your parents probably want you to make friends from your school who they can actually meet and talk to. The Internet is fun but it can also be dangerous. You can't really know someone from a chat line. It is really anonymous. You may want to consider joining an afterschool activity, a sports or drama club to meet people. You may not think their rules are fair but they have your best interest at heart. By the way who said life was fair?

Your parents rules are your parents rules, however, maybe they would be able to compromise with you a bit. Try exchanging household chores, or good grades if you don't have them, for some time on MSN during the week. Keep reading too. You can never be too smart!

Maybe your parents want you to do more activities outside the house. It is important to keep active. There are lots of kids that spend too much time on the computer, playing video games and watching TV.
I think it is great that you read, but maybe try finding something outdoors that you like to do.

well, if you are not allowed to watch tv and they say you read too much, i'm kind of wondering what they want you to do with your time. i would talk to them about it. maybe they could set you up with a certain time frame that you could use it during the week, like an hour a day or something.

I have two younger sisters both whom love messengers. One of my sisters recently got a PM from someone saying they were going to kill her and useing her real name. I personally and this my opioion do not think any child meaning anyone under 18 should be chatting online. Its dangerous and anything could happen. So to me I think your parents are being MORE then fair.
