I have a 14 YO Mini Schnauzer. He has developed a scab on his back that won't go away. He is also no longer growing fur on his belly and inner parts of his legs. Any idea what may be causing these 2 things? Any remedies?

I would take him to the vet, its the only way to find out what he has, this could be serious, I surgest you call your vet as soon as possible. If all is okay or normal for his age then consider a high quality senior diet for him. Ask your Vet about 3V Skin Caps which have Omega 3 fatty acids, Vit A, D and E which work together to improve skin and coat. It may or may not be appropriate for him.
If you decide to change his diet go with a Venison meat source because it is a meat dogs are less sensitive to. Nature's Recipe has a Venison and Rice food and Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance has a Venison and Potato blend.
Wheat, corn are major allergens and are used to a high degree in many commercial dog foods.
Beet pulp, molasses and soy are not good ingredients either. Your Vet may want to put your dog on a prescription diet but try to get something other than Hill's brand if that is the case.

Not to be rude but you should have called a vet as soon as you saw it. You wasted time and could have, if your dog is in pain, made things worse by waiting to call a vet. If you had a scab on your back you would've went to a doctor right away, at least I hope you would have anyway. If you think there is anything wrong with your dog you should call the vet instead of wasting time trying to get answers from most some people who are just guessing about what's wrong with him. Hi there.

It could be just a fungal infection on the skin, which causes the loss of hair once it has turned into a scab. You can look at doing 2 things, giving your dog a anti-bacterial wash which you can by from the vet. Or by taking the dog to the vet. If the dog is really irritated by the scabs I would suggest taking it to the vet, where they can give an anti-inflammatory injection or tablet to make her comfortable.
But if shes not overly bothered by it, try the wash and see how it goes :)

Good Luck :)

you need the vet NOW, This happened to me with my beloved bull terrier I let the scab go on for months, by the time I got her to the vet it was to late she had cancer , Dogs handle pain different than people, they hid it. I took her home to say good by to her family and spend a few more days with me and I had her put down in my arms she just went to sleep, in hindsight she suffered and I didn't know. now I know ,she was 13 years old, but at 10 her behavior and attitude changed after the autopsy I found out why, the vet said she was fill with cancer and that she probably had it for 3 to 5 years. That was one of the most painful days of my life to find out my friend was in pain and I didn't understand her actions. Good luck, hope I am wrong

Sounds like he may be having some thyroid problems, but you really need to take him to the vet.
