If you want to make modifications or allow other people to, keep it in .doc format. Make it a pdf if you want to distribute it. You can edit a pdf, but word does a better job.

Word is widely used and is editable by anyone who has Word.

PDF is used where you want to send someone a copy of a file but the person does not have the program with which to open it. It is read only and has to be converted to Word by purchasing a PDF converter.

I suggest you use .doc files for documents under 2 pages.
For "book size" documents, I would use Adobe.

use word when you don't want to transfer the file to another computer because the fonts in you computer may not be present in the computer you take the file you saves. use adobe when you want to share the material pdf is a very rich format partly image and partly text. the use is that even after you transfer the file to a computer which doesn't have the font you used they can transfer the pdf into normal text using the text recognization tool in a pdf viewer.
