Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson

anyone who says muhammed ali is not being honest, is biased or just hasn't studied the actual fights of boxing history. Joe Lewis is proven by definition of the word the best heavyweight. Marciano fought old men so we'll never really know, and larry holmes did the same really except he just kept going longer but doesn't effect a how good a fighter is in total. That would be like saying holyfield is taking away from the greatness of his previous victories by fighting now. Cassius Clay did not knock out sonny liston get real people, liston was owned by the mob and clay by 11 millionaires and angelo dundees brother (in with the mob) was listons manager. i mean really liston wasn't a good actor for that knock out rolling like an idiot. he also had longer arms than clay yet kept pretending his arm was falling short. look closely he wasn't really using his jab(compare it to waht he did with his other opponents). Frazier beat him in the first one, (i fell asleep in the 2nd) and there was nothing in the third and frazier didn't even talk to his corner for a while so the difference was the trainers. (but yea he won) and he didn't really beat ken norton, come on that guy had ali's number. He then tricked foreman(an amateur who was champ through pure strength) foreman had hardly boxed any rounds and learnt a lesson in zaire that most boxers learn before they turn pro as they have more experience(punching yourself out that is). Also just compare the count to that of buster douglas went down against tyson. There were a few things. Don't get me wrong he was a great fighter but when giving someone the number 1 you have to take it all into consideration. Look at joe louis. When he came back from his defeat it was a round 1 KO. Ali was finished like a zimmer frame fighter at 36. Holyfield was KO'ing tyson at that age and fighting lennox lewis later still.
If an alien watched all teh championship fights over the last 90yrs(without seeing any media stuff) they would come to one conclusion on ratings as far as achievement and proven ability. Joe Louis, there have been none that have lived up to that bar.

I would have to say Sugar Ray Robinson.

Ali and Joe Louis are popular choices for sure and that's understandable. We can make a case for Muhammad as the most popular and charismatic sports figure of all time and Louis as the best heavyweight of all time. But since we're talking about the greatest boxer ever, then we should stick to the boxer and his craft: boxing.

Ray Robinson had all the tools to excel in the sport. He had great speed, both of hand and foot. He packed tremendous power in both hands that enabled him to knock his opponents down even while backpedalling. And speaking of backpedalling, he had the best footwork the sport has ever seen. His defense was not as superior as his offensive skills, but with his perpetual movements accentuated by his unbelievable speed, he was very very hard to hit. As far as ability to take punches is concerned, well, his bouts with LaMotta will attest to his granite chin. Lastly, we must remember that the term best or greatest pound-for-pound fighter was invented to describe Robinson. What more is there to say?

Oh by the way, Ali had repeatedly professed his admiration and respect for Sugar Ray and declared him as his ultimate idol.

Rocky Marciano, hands down.

An argument can be made for John L. Sullivan as well. No gloves, bare fisted and when he became the first ever heavyweight champion, he fought for 75 rounds...let's see someone do that!

I really enjoyed the message about NO ONE could stop Mike Tyson in his PRIME or all that. I seem to remember Buster Douglas doing just that. Tyson was in his prime. No one projected him to lose that fight because he might not be up to it, or was about to go to prison or any of that crap. That is what happens when you are on top, you have nowhere to go but down. He lost to Buster Douglas while he was in his prime. Yes, I think Tyson should have won, but he didn't. It wasn't an accident either, hell it took ten rounds. Either way you look at it, Holyfield was a better boxer and could defend himself against Tyson so even if Tyson had beaten Douglas, he would have lost to Holyfield in his next fight.

Tyson is a joke.....won't even waste key types on that~

You ask greatest?? Very general question..

Ali's skills-DOMINATED Louis. Louise had alot of heart, physical strength, and was a great fighter....but, not half the fighter of Ali or Marciano.

And the ALIENS said~
Rocky Marciano
Ali
Both much better fighters than the rest~

Mike Tyson in his prime, NO ONE COULD, or CAN stop him during his prime, he was such a good hybrid boxer, speed, accuracy/technique of an in-boxer, stamina of a swarmer, and power of a brawler. Tyson in his prime was the greatest, hands-down. Greatest as in an extremely skilled boxer as well as a crowd-pleasing boxer (sports are entertainments afterall)

next wud be Muhammud Ali (Cassius Clay), his footwork and speed is legendary. Not THAT exciting though, still his footwork, tactics in matches still amazes me.

there's alot more greatest boxers but yeah i'm hardcore pre-prison tyson fan.

this has nothing to do withit but i just have to get it out of my chest.
The WORST boxer in the history nowadays is Ann Wolfe. her vulgar victory dance in that one match just made me sick, she's a disgrace to her race, other boxers and sportsmanship itself.
