Is it possible to locate an orphanage and like help around with the kids [ read to them, play,....anything...] . Can I call and ask if I can do community work there??? I really have been wanting to do it since last year, but I haven't been working on finding out where it's at or anything. I really want to do it there, is it possible?

And I'd be really sad if I couldn't do it, it's been something I've been wanting to do, like I said before.

That is true that there are no longer orphanages in the United States. States try to place children in foster homes or with other relatives. There are however orphanages in other nations. I had the privilege of working in an orphanage in South America for a few weeks in the summer of 2000 and 2001. It was a life changing experience and I will never forget my time there. I was able to go with members from my church to help build a new school for the children and when we weren't hammering and nailing, we spent lots of time playing with the children. Many Christian missions groups work with churches to send people to help out in other countries. Not sure how it would work for you if you're not part of a group such as the church going to an orphanage in another country. I'm sure that people who run the orphanages are concerned about the safety of the children and can't just have anyone come and work with them. I know at least for my church, we have had a relationship with the orphanage for many years so they trust the group of people that we send. I'm sure there are still many opportunities to work with children in your community. It's great that you have a heart for helping children and I wish you luck in finding something rewarding.

Orphanages don't exist anymore... there are children's homes that you could work at... like the Ronald McDonald house or something...
