what type of dog food do you feed mans best friend, dogs, any reccomendations?

The answer would vary according to the dog. If I had a German Shepherd Dog I would probably feed her a raw diet.
With a Great Dane, they need less protein and I'd probably feed her a Venison, Rabbit or Duck blend of high quality dog food.
My Pit mix does not tolerate lamb or chicken in commercial dog foods very well so I give her Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice.
If the dog has allergies, I'd avoid wheat and corn ingredients which are very common in most dog foods.
If the dog was overweight, I'd check out a lower fat content
Bottom line, I couldn't recommend just one kind of dog food but could say in general that it's a good idea to do some homework on what is good for you own dogs needs according to breed, weight, age and health.
I'd watch their treats too and stay away from junk food treats.
Vets are not always well versed in nutrition and some promote a food for reasons other than health.

I feed all mine Canidae chicken and rice, they all do very well on that. Iams is junk, mostly corn meal, read the ingredients. Supermarket dog food is not nutritious - get a good dry without corn meal or artificial preservatives - first ingredient listed should be meat - you will not find food like this at the supermarket or Walmart. Try a feed store or large pet store or do an online search for a source of Canidae or other good kibble. By the way "Animal Expert", Science Diet is no better than supermarket junk, main ingredient is also corn meal, not meat. Your vet gets paid to stock it, it's still crap.

There are a lot of foods out there that are okay for you dog, and even more that aren't.
Look at the ingredients. First on the list should be a meat, not byproduct. Also, one major problem with dog foods is that a lot of them contain corn. It is VERY common for dogs to be allergic to corn.
I don't recommend asking your vet for food advice. Vets will usually tell you what they are selling is best and that is simply not true.
Any food that is made with "human grade" ingredients will be much healthier for your dog.
I use Diamond Lamb & Rice formula, but only a small amount. I mix it in with my homemade dog food.

The answers that have already been posted are really horribly uninformed.

First and foremost, your veterinarian does not know best what to feed your dog. Veterinarians receive very little training about dog nutrition, and much of their knowledge on nutrition comes from information packages that are sent to them by dog food companies. The majority of vets are no better equipped to advise you on healthy foods than the clerks at PetsMart.

What you will want to feed is the best quality food that you can reasonably afford. What I mean by that is, not everyone has vast amounts of cash to spend, but we should make an effort to feed the best quality that we can buy with the money we do have to spend on dog food.

You will want to read the dog food label. The ingredients on dog food are listed by amount - the ingredients listed first make up most of the food, and the ingredients listed last are contained the least. The kind of food you will want to look for are foods that list meats - beef, chicken, lamb, etc. - at the beginning of the list, and things such as fillers (wheat, corn, etc.), chemicals (dyes, food coloring, etc.) and preservatives last.

You will also want to be careful with foods containing a lot of "meals" (ground bones, ground corn, etc.), and by-products, as they often include meat "not fit for consumption", and also, if you have a dog with sensitive skin and allergies you will want to keep away from products that contain a lot of wheat and corn as they are a major cause of allergies in dogs.

Some of the better quality commercial dog foods found at Petsmart and some grocery stores are Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo. For the price you're paying for those, you're actually getting a decent product.

Some higher quality food brands would be California Naturals, Innova, TimberWolf Organics, Solid Gold, Wellness, etc. You would most likely need to find a specialty food store (such as Booth Feeds) or specialty pet store to purchase them, or order them online.

I would say to absolutely keep away from the low-grade commercial kibbles out there, such as BilJac, Beneful, Iams, Kibbles'n'Bits, etc. The majority of foods sold at Wal Mart and grocery stores falls into this category.

So far , most of the people who have responded to your question have no clue what they are talking about. The 2 Abby's and Jo do know something.

Dog food started becoming popular in the 50's, when rendering companies (companies that need to get rid of diseased and dying animals..unfit for human consumption) decided they wanted to get paid to get rid of the diseased animals...instead of having it cost them.

They came up with the idea of turning it into pet food. Since petfood is mostly unregulated, not only were they allowed to do this, they started using terms like *healthy and balanced*.

"Don't feed your dogs tablefood," they told the public. "Our food is healthy and balanced." Pet food was not regulated, so they were able to get away with it.

People beleived it cause they didn't know any better, and assumed the governement was regulating it. And it was easy and always available for them.

So it took off. And now you pay to feed your beloved pets diseased and cancerous animals.(this is only a small part of the nasty stuff in most dog foods). To learn more..get the book *Food That Pets Die For*.

Are any dog foods good for your dog? YES

Those mentioned by the Abby's. Most *specialty* dog food stores sell only dog foods made out of human grade meats..or USDA recommended meat. These are fine.

ANy of the dog foods you see in commercials, in the grocery store..or at most major pet stores are NOT good dog foods for your beloved furkid.

Table scraps are better, and so is a raw diet.

Most vet's not only have no idea what is in dog food...they learn very little about it at school, and most vet schools are subsidized by those *nasty* dog food companies. So vet schools have a vested interest *not to go there* to say the least.

Vets I know who do know about dog foods...never feed those crappy brands to their pets.

Hope that helps.

We feed all our dogs blueseal superpremium foods usually lamb and rice. Its all natural no additives, its inexpensive and really has everything your dog needs. Dont but the junk in the grocery stores its full of additives and fillers. There are alot of designer foods out there but they are really expensive. Some of the Science diet foods are very good too as well as Imes. Read the label and stay away from any meat by products you dont want to know what they are

I have a large dog. He gets 300gms canned food everyday with 2 cups of biscuits - plus our leftovers after dinner.

I walk him 3 times a week.

On Friday I buy a bag of bones from the butchers, He gets the bones and biscuits instead on his canned meat for the weekend.

I change the brand of the canned food and buiscuits on a regular basis so the food doesn't seem boring for him.

Different versions of Science Diet is what works for us. We use Science Diet Senior for our 10 year old dog, and Science Diet Puppy for our 6 month old. We have heard that Purina can cause kidney problems.
