I have always been able to pick up foreign languages quite easily. When I was in Germany I was pretty fluent after about 9 mos. I taught myself Spanish and had never met a Spanish person until I was 20. I learned some French when I was 10 and many phrases. People who hear me are surprised that I'm American. My question is why does it come so easy for me? Is there a name for this? I also understand when a non-English speaking peron is try to talk to me. Any advice or answer. (I know it sounds wierd)

congratulations.

however, you may not find Chinese not as easy as other European languages. Spanish and French have a lot of similarities to English. So it is much easier.
But if you try Chinese, you would have to have a new set of rules for grammar, and learn to write.
this means you start from 20-30% when you learn Spanish with an English language basis. but you start from 0-5% when you learn Chinese, and 5-10% when you learn Korean, Japanese, etc.

They say the natural ability for picking up languages goes at about the age of twelve in most people. If you started learning a language before then and kept going, it stops your ability fading as much. On top of that, you may be simply good at learning languages because of your genes.

The name you are looking for might be polyglot. Women and people under 8 years learn multiple languages quicker than men and older people. They believe that it is due to developing neural connections, and once a second language is learned, others come easier.

When you're young, you learn any languages with ease.

My friend speaks 7 languages. I only speak 3.

almost all kids before they are ten have the same abilities
Take any kid ,put him among foreiners or in a foreign country and they pick up the lingo in no time
its when the brain is especially receptive to establish the means to comunicate.

My husband's the same way. He can speak six different languages (at least) fluently. I think that's a wonderful talent. Wish I had it. Guess it comes naturally to some. Congrats!
