I want what I think is a pretty simple tattoo of a sunset that has mostly Japanese-style elements. (i haven't actually talked to an artist about it yet.) I would prefer an artist in the Santa Cruz area, but I think I'd be willing to go as far as San Francisco for someone really awesome. Any suggestions? (And please don't tell me not to get one or that I shouldn't get one, etc. I'm doing it for me, so I really don't care if you think it's unattractive or whatever...)

The fact that you have to book a appointment ahead is a good thing......Do your research.....Look up tattoo artists on the internet and look at their portfolios....and be willing to pay for the best....remember the old saying "a good tattoo ain't cheap and a cheap tattoo ain't good"

The artist you want is Stephanie at "Ink Ink Tattoo" 830 Lincoln Bl., Venice, CA. She has many books of pictures of tattoos she has done on dark skin. She is always a master tattoo artist, so your idea should be no problem.

I would recommend to check out a Tattoo expo where many artists are and you can look at all their books and talk to them.
There is one coming up in San Francisco in March/April.
Good luck!!

You want Chris Garver. He is co-owner of True Tattoo in LA. He is a master tattooist and he is internationally recognized. The wed address for his shop is www.truetattoo.net , he has a lot of his tats & art ( he is a painter as well) on the site. He is in demand so you may have to be flexible with the appointment. He LOVES Japanese tattoos.

My tattoo artist is Dawei Zhang...www.daweitattoo.com. He's in downtown SJ. He's known around the world, check out his site, you'll be very impressed. His wait time is pretty tied up though. I booked my appt in mid oct and the earliest that I could get was last Friday.

My friends and I all went to Miami Ink to get our tattoos and we loved them!Everyone else that we knew just didn't meet the standards that we had.
