so my sister just had a baby tonight - 2 hours ago a little girl - and my 3 year old daughter is dying to see her new cousin. shes even crying but the hospital will not allow children under 12 on the maternity floor due to flu season - now heres my question, do they not think that people older than 12 can carry illnesses in? am i wrong?

im not saying that i think the hospital is wrong i just think that its silly to put the age limit on it. my kids have had flu shots and neither are sick and my sister is the only one on the floor. also for that matter i could bring in any number of germs from the outside - so whats the point? i know about the immune systems also - i just think the whole "under 12" thing is silly

the "under 12" thing is what really gets me - do children become immune when they turn 12?

well i am sorry to say, but you are right. i think they dont allow kids because of other reason, like screaming, and rush and all the emergency stuffs, you know. your kid can be scared of being a mother in the future if she sees all this at this age.

The hospital is in the right. This is quite common in hospitals these days. The reason is because children don't have fully developed immune systems and any bug they catch is going to hit them harder than adults. Hospitals are loaded with all sorts of bugs and the hospital is trying to protect the little ones from getting sick.
Also, I agree with the above poster that said the hospitals may feel that children can be less meticulous about covering their mouths when coughing, not wiping their noses with their hands and being good hand washers.
Of course your child is upset however, you need to respect the hospitals policy. Children cry over many things, having to go to school, go to bed early etc. Try to explain it to her in a way she can understand and be firm with your daughter. Before she knows it, she will be able to see her little cousin..outside of the hospital.

Ofcourse, 12 year old can carry the illness. Except, under 12, there immune system is still young and isn't that strong yet, so it's best for your little child to stay OUT. Just tell her that she will she her cousin real soon!

12 year olds can carry it but like everyone said... small kids dont have a good, strong immune system yet so they are more prone to getting sick.

I think their logic behind it is that children under 12 are less cleanly about themselves. Wiping their noses w/their hands or coughing w/their mouths open. Just my thought.

Some adults are necessary but no children are necessary. It is problematic to separate the adults. By reducing any exposure at all they help the new babies.

maybe children are more prone to illness.
they are at school with a bunch of other sick kids and could spread chickenpox and whatnot..
my opinion from my own experience.

alot of the thinking is that ages over 12 have better control over their coughing, blowing nose, washing hands, and sneezing. that and they tend not to run around. over all better self control.
