If it is during dinner hours then finish your dinner and then call them back. That way you can give them your full attention and you won't be worried about your food cooling.
How ever if it is an emergency call that is differnent. In that case finish your mouthful and find out what is going on. If it is not life or death then let them know you are just finishing your dinner and will be calling them back shortly. Double check the number and then finish your meal.

why are you answering your phone during a meal AND with your mouth full of food? common sense needs to come into play here. if this is a "can't miss this" call, then spit out your food and dive to answer it or continue to fast forever in anticipation of that call. does that make any sense to you? it shouldn't. so, ignore your phone while you are dining. call the chump back that calls during your dinner hour and explain, nicely of course, that you had been eating when he called and got back to him a.s.a.p.

Just wait till you chew your food and swallow (If this person is so important, hurry) Then say..." I am sorry, you caught me in the middle of eating" I am sure it has happened to him also.As it has happened to me. Or better " you caught me in the middle of breakfast,lunch, supper" whatever the case. That sounds better.

using the cell at the dinner table is rude.
If i had driven you to dinner (if you were a chick) and you picked up the phone, i would leave you at the restaurant to do your call and pay for the meal

u can either swallow your food first then call them back or if u swallow in time pick up, or u can always do what max suggested

Do what we do at my house at dinner...all phones are turned off. After dinner they go back on.
