Certainly, Rocky Marciano deserves consideration for the honour and though I've grown more appreciate of his lust for combat, merciless punch output and concussive power I have to say that his diminutive stature and lack of competition leaves him short of the top spot.

Ezzard Charles, Joe Walcott and Archie Moore were all terrific fighters but though offering little difference in weight to Marciano, were, Charles and Moore's case, Light-Heavyweights.

By way of comparison, Muhammad Ali defeated Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Ken Norton - all of whom were heavyweight champions and top 25 heavyweights of all time themselves. A difficult body of work to beat.

The computer match-up between the two should be discarded as a judge of their relative merits, and whilst not wishing to dilute the debate down to a comparison between Ali and Marciano, because other fighters like Joe Louis, Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield all deserve consideration, but Ali's victories over squat punchers like Frazier and Quarry suggest he would have found a way to beat the Rock.

And considering his other achievements on top of this proposed success in any fantasy match-up I have to place Marciano at least one step down from the top rung of heavyweights in history. Interesting debate though.

The computer bout imo was worthless. The only way to know if a fighter can beat another fighter is to fight each other, and as these 2 great fighters were from different eras it is impossible to know. Marciano has a perfect record, but Ali fought much better opponents. To be fair the real big names Marciano fought were past their best. Boxing ability, speed, footwork and style made Ali second to none. I would say that as a complete fighter Ali was much better than Marciano. A prime Tyson, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes and Holyfield in my book also rate above Marciano.
Ali was the greatest heavyweight that has ever entered a boxing ring as an all round fighter.

While I'm too young to have seen much of Marciano, I watched Ali at the end of his career, when he was still spellbinding (albeit in flashes) and once asked my Dad, a former ABA finalist, what he reckoned. He said Marciano would have kept coming and coming but Ali would have cut him to ribbons and won easily on points. 49-0 isn't proof by itself of a great fighter, OK you can't beat it but how good were the 49? As the erudite gentleman above me points out, Ali beat Liston, Foreman and Frazier and I can't think of anyone else who's done that.

if all the heavyweights fought at their peak it has to be tyson an absolute animal in his early 20s and beat everything put against him before to many hangers on ruined him ali was great at his peak but tysons punching power would have told early on marciano was a brawler and not even a heavyweight he was small and usally weighed in on 14 stone ali tyson forman and lewis would knock him out very early so for me it has to be iron mike forget his later problems and remember the man at his peak .
