It doesn't seem like it takes much physical exertion. If you do yoga for 30 min, does it count as the recommended daily amount of exercise?

There are two types of exercise: aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic exercise an any activity that raises your heart and breathing rate, generally making you sweat. It conditions your cardiovascular and respiratory systems, burns calories, and builds endurance and stamina. Activities that fall into this category include jogging, swimming, rowing, cycling, dancing, etc.

Activities that involve intense bursts of effort rather than sustained huffing and puffing are called anaerobic. These types of exercise tend to be good for toning and building muscles, increasing strength ans speed, and/or for stretching and increasing flexibility and suppleness. Examples of this include weight training, floor training (push-ups, sit-ups, squats), and generally, doing yoga poses one at a time.

If you would like to turn yoga into an aerobic and anaerobic hybrid, start with doing Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) which combines the yoga poses into a sequence of continuous flow, making at quite a vigorous aerobic work out. Doing 10 to 12 rounds is recommended. After Sun Salutations, you can do other yoga postures that build strength and flexibility, one at a time, as your anaerobic segment of your yoga practice.

Doing this combination may take an hour, depending on how long you hold the poses and how many poses you do. If you really want to shorten it to 30 minutes, just do the Sun Salutations, which is a complete workout in itself as it involves cardiovascular endurance, as well as a fair amount of stretching (although not as much since you don't hold the poses too long).

Exercise is just as crucial as food intake when it comes to losing weight. There's plenty of excellent guidance for exercise on the site in the box below. I lost 5 pounds by doing as they advised.
