My sister is pregnant she has a boxer who is energetic and jumps and loves to play (do not worry she makes sure it does NOT jump on her.) I am wondering if any of you have any experience with dogs and your newborn baby. :-)

My sister just recently had a baby and they have a retired Greyhound.

At first your dog will most likely be jealous of the baby but the best thing you can do is remind your dog who is in charge. The dog will no doubt bark when the baby cries and growl when in the nursery.

My sister found that using a short leash when the dog is around the baby was an easy way to remind the dog that she was in charge.

When the dog starts to bark or growl, give the 'lay down' command and if the dog doesn't quiet down give a short, but gentle tug upwards on the leash. This will close the jaw and eventually the dog will remember that it needs to be quiet around baby. It does take patience as you don't want to rush the process and make the dog think it's being punished!

If you don't want to use a short leash, just remember to give your dog lots of love so he doesn't think he's been replaced!

Hope this helps!
