if you want a cheap one, it costs about $40. with those, you have to freeze the canister for a few hours prior to making the ice cream. the more expensive ones (around $159, Lello Gelato Jr. at Amazon.com) have a built in compressor similar to your refrigerator which cools it down as you make the ice cream. these allow you to make batch after batch without having to pre-freeze the canister.
