Labrador Retrievers. However, they aren't the breed for everyone.
Go to your local shelter or to petfinder.com and start looking at dogs. Apply to adopt and let the people at the rescue help you find the right dog for your lifestyle. Maybe it will be a lab, maybe it will be a mixed breed.
It just depends on the time you have, the amount of work you want to do, your yard, etc.
Good luck and I hope you consider adoption!

There's no overall "best kind" of dog breed - the "best" breed depends entirely upon what you need or want the dog for.
Some dogs have excellent noses and if you wanted to get into tracking or search & rescue work, you'd want to look at breeds who excel at that sort of work. Some dogs are low energy and low maintenance, and if you wanted a companion dog, maybe that's where to look for that.
The thing is, all dogs are great dogs - if they're in the right home with the right people. You wouldn't want a hyper, working Malinois to be in a home where it's alone for 12 hours a day and gets no exercise - that type of dog needs a job. And at the same time, a laid back, spoiled little Shi-Tzu would probably not be well suited in a home that is hardcore into dog sports.
So what it comes down to is - what's your living situation, what do you want to do with the dog. Once you give that information, people will be able to tell you what the best breed would be.

It really depends on what you want the dog for if you want for a companion such as a lap-dog or a watch dog size, all kind of things factor in.
Personally, the best kinds of dogs I have ever had are the mutts, they aren't high maintence, always happy to see you, and you've saved a dog that could of been put to sleep or not been able to have a great life.
* For a bigger dog, I'd suggest a Chow Chow. They are great watch dogs and great companions at the same time if you get one as a puppy or even if you get an older one that has been trained to have a good tempermant. Some Chow Chow's can be very aggressive if not trained right.
* For a smaller dog, I'd suggest either a chiuaua or a mix breed. I've had 3 chiuaua's and they all ended up being great dogs, very sweet, loved to cuddle, didn't shed too much (unless you get a long haired one) and we're always there for you and always happy to see you. They can be agressive though when it comes to their "person" Right now I own a cocker/basset stray and he is one of the best dogs I've ever had, very smart but very hyper but his sweetness makes up for it. I also have a pomeranian, shes REALLY REALLY smart but she sheds alot and alot of grooming is at hand.
Also please consider the price of the vet, toys, food, grooming, etc. before getting a dog.
I'd suggest adopting from a humane society or a pound, you may find a best friend for life!
Good luck :)

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. What a sweet dog and great companion!
Best kind of Dog Breed depends on; what kind of living conditions, apartment, city, country, how big or how small, what color, etc. It is a personal choice. Many dogs in Shelter need and want a home, it is a matter of life and death for them.

ok firstly, i agree and disagree with many of the answers on here. just bcause you love a specific breed doesnt mean it's right for another person. you should check out the breed information prior to getting a dog. i worked at a vets office and we had labradors come in trying to rip your face apart while pit bulls were generally the sweetest breeds. and for chow chows, i DO NOT recommend them. i had one and he was crazy aggressive and damn stubborn even though he was highly socialized as a puppy. so the question is not what you think is best, but the information on the breed.

I'd have to say my Leo. He's a Golden Retriever/Saint Bernard mix with Chow somewhere down the line, adopted. He has the best manners, is extremely smart and loyal, is great with the kids but at the same time, a wonderful guard dog! I have yet to meet a dog better than him.
Mutts rock!! Adopt and save ones life!

I think Boston Terriers are. They're really, really loveable dogs, they hardly shed, they sleep a lot but are also really active for those who enjoy having a more active dog. They do well in any sort of house setting, apartments, farms, city. Anywhere. The biggest thing though is just that they are love bugs, and all they want at the end of the day is to be held and loved.

I have my own opinions about what breed I think (know :P) is the best BUT, you should pick out a few breeds and research them before deciding for yourself. If you don't think the ones you chose will fit your lifestyle, go through the process again.
