When pure gas arrives at your burner, oxygen is mixed in to produce a hotter "blue" flame. A bunsen burner is a good example of this. Burners are normally set to allow the gas to be further oxygenated to an extent without affecting burner efficiency.

Gas pressure is more important than oxygenation factor up to a point so the gas company will supplement oxygen into the lines to maintain pressure if they are not able to produce enough gas due to high demand in winter months.
