I dislike the term "Native American" used in this context. Anyone born in the United States is a "native American" regardless of their ethnic or national origin. In a sense, so is anyone born in Canada and Latin America too. Even most so-called Native Americans I know prefer to be called "American Indians" and find nothing offensive with it.

My advice for your homework essay would be to find an American Indian tribal group which most interests you: Mohawks, Cherokee, Choctaw, Sioux, Navajo, Duwamish (Seattle area), Yana (Central California) etc. and read as much as you can on them. Even your local public library will probably have enough information on them to do a 700 -1,000 word essay. .

The tribal groups I mentioned would be the easiest ones to write an essay about on short notice because much has been written about them. On the other hand, very little has been written about groups like the Chickasaw, the Mandans and the Cayoose.

There are lots of books written about the Cherokee Trail of Tears episode. Theodora Kroeber wrote an excellent book called "Ishi" on the life of the last member of the Yana tribe in California who died of tuberculosis in 1916. The book can be easily obtained from any library and is still in some bookstores. That could easily be converted into a fictional essay by trying to imagine yourself as the last survivor of the Yana (or any other tribe for that matter) and talking about the problems you have adjusting to twentieth century civilization.

Good luck. I know you can do it!
