Shingles is an interesting disease - you can only get it if you have had chickenpox. The chickenpox virus goes dormant in your system once you have recovered. At some point (or points) in your life, it can reactivate, causing a rash in a small area of the body (shingles). Most people do not get shingles until they are much older (the average age of cases is 60). Chickenpox can cause sterility, although it is a rare event, and tends to happen in adults and older children. If you had chickenpox as a young child, the risk is minimal.

There is a vaccine for chickenpox, so if you haven't had the disease and haven't been vaccinated, get vaccinated. A vaccine against shingles has also recently been approved by the FDA, which will help prevent shingles from occurring in older adults.
