I think I learned in a psych class I took, that you can only remember your dreams when you are in a certain phase of sleep. When you sleep there are 4 different phases you go through and the only phase you dream and can remember your dreams are in REM sleep. It has to do with your brainwaves and how they are constantly changing. If you are in deep sleep, your brain waves become very slow and if you dream in that state, you won't remember cuz it stays locked in your subconcious.

I usually do not remember my dreams when I get woken up by an alarm clock, or I know I have to go somewhere (work) by a certain time.

I remember my dreams when it doesn't matter when I wake up.

I think that when I have to get up and get going right away, I'm already thinking about other stuff and a lot of my mental energy is focused on making myself get up and get ready for the day, and I lose the dreams.

Most people have trouble remembering their dreams...

If you really want to remember them, then write whatever you remember from your dreams down on paper as soon as you wake up, and revisit them later. Also, if you set your alarm to ring at 4 or 5 am, you can wake up with the dreams fresh in your head and write them down then.

Either they were too mundane to remember, or you aren't making an effort to remember them. I find it hard to remember my dreams unless I'm keeping a dream journal and practicing. Try writing down whichever dreams you can remember, and eventually you'll start finding them easier to recall.

Maybe your subconscious doesn't have anything to tell you. You could try placing a pen and a pad of paper under your pillow, this will prompt your brain to try and remember a dream or two in a night.
