Some birds have more of a difficult time. A good diet of pellet food,10%seeds,and 10% fruits and veggies help. Warm baths in 2 inches of water in a sink helps. You can flick the water and act enthusiastically to teach them to enjoy the bath since you are flock leader. Chopped hard cooked egg three times a week with the shell crumbled adds protein and other nutrients for feather growth. Good food and warm baths help and also decrease the stress of moulting. In addition to the answers you've gotten, moulting makes them itchy. The sheaths are little plastic casings that feathers are inside when they grow outward, and the feeling of those little casings on each feather is quite irritating.

Sometimes birds will help flockmates by preening off these sheaths, and sometimes humans will be able to carefully slide them off of the feathers. The itchiest part seems to be the head, since they can't get those on their own, so yes, typically they do get quite cranky because they're significantly less comfortable than normal.

LOL Yeah, they do get cranky during molts. Thank GOD, Rio, our Military Macaw is almost finished with his. He's Mr. Attitude when he's NOT moulting, but when he is, I'm the only one allowed anywhere near him, and it's only because I'll help him preen those feathers. LOL
