I think the line is when you start hangin out with your kids. A parent is someone who guides and gives discipline. And teaches manners and respect. When parents start partying with there kids that's when the line is broken.

Personally i think that being a parent is the first 18 years of your child's life. Then being a friend can happen after the age of 18 and they are now independant. My Mom always tried to be my friend, and I needed her in so many way to just be my mom. I really don't think that you can do you and / or your child justice when you are trying to be both to them at the same time. Being a parent is what they need, they will make plenty of friends.

I don't know that there's a simple answer to your question. The line is different for everyone, depending on you and your child.

I think (and my son's only 1, so this is just an opinon) that you have to set rules and have discipline. But I also think you need to listen to your child and be open with them and answer any questions they ask.

For example, you probably don't want to hear about your child's sex life like a friend would. However, you should answer any questions your child has about sex and be willing to help them get condoms, birth control, etc. to prevent an accidental pregnancy or STDs.

I think it's also a good idea to be upfront about experiences you've had in the past. I don't mean saying, "Yeah, we used to smoke pot every day and it was a blast." I mean admitting that you've done it, and talking about how it made you feel and why you quit.

Hope this helps!

When the parent can no longer look after their child or will no longer set restrictions and guidelines for their child. Instead its the child telling the parent what to do because he/she is so used to treating the parent as a friend.

The fine line come into play when they are doing something that will hurt themselves or others.
But can you really be a friend and a parent?
Seems not.

There is no fine line IMO. There is a very clear distinction.
