This is in regard to a 5 month old Border Collie that belongs to my stepson. He wants to keep her from becoming pregnant with his Border Collie male until she is old enough. He works construction and takes the dogs with him every day. BUT he can't watch them every minute! Didn't know if there was such a thing as a shot or pills you could give a ***** to avoid her getting pregnant or if his only option is separation while she is in heat?

Your stepson is a backyard breeder. Take the dog and get her fixed. Then, take the male and get him fixed. He should not be breeding them. To do so is irresponsible, unethical, and immoral. Shame on him. If he wants puppies, he should buy some from a good breeder, not create his own little puppy mill of pet quality dogs.

To answer your question, the only way to keep the dog from getting pregnant is to get her fixed. Call your vet to see if they have any better options, but again, the dogs SHOULD NOT be bred.

There is a shot that your vet can give her called Ovaban. It seems to work well and it is not extremely expensive. It actually keeps the dog from ovulating, thus preventing her from becoming pregnant. If she has already bred there is a shot called MisMate that will abort the litter. The MisMate can cause uterine infection, so she should be put on an antibiotic if she receives it, but I have never heard of any problems with the Ovaban.

The doggie panties and covers for both male and female dogs will not keep the dog from getting pregnant. All they will do is keep the mess to a minimum.

No absolutely not... this happens all the time with neutered males & females in heat. Yeah, when the female is spayed she'll stop having heat cycles. Anyway, as a person that rescues dogs, I get the males neutered immediately & wait until a female has come in heat once (so I know she was not spayed without having a vet tell me) before getting the operation done. When one dog "humps" another, it has nothing to do with sex in the majority of cases... it is a sign that the dog on top is above the other dog in the pack pecking order. Many fail to understand that when a female or male humps a member of the same sex, they are saying I am ABOVE YOU IN THIS PACK.

There used to be a product similar to birht control in dogs and there is a shot you can give them early to have them abort. The problem is both can cause her uterus to become infected and that can be life threatening. It really would be better to keep her in a crate and leash walk her. She needs to be kept away from him or any other male until her 3 week cycle is finished. It is also going to drive him crazy while she is in heat. Unless she is a top quality dog she should really be spayed for her own health.

At the pet store they have a diaper with throw away absorbent pads that you change and it is fastened with Velcro. It protects your carpets and furniture from getting blood stains and covers her vagina and the male can't get to it. Draw back....you have to take it off for her to pee, but has an opening in the rear for going dodo. I have one for my female Chihuahua and it works great. Try Petco Pet Stores. Also....try to keep them separated during her heat, it's tough on both dogs. The heat only lasts about 7 to 9 days and it comes every 6 months. If you aren't going to breed her than have her spayed.

there is a product for the male which is a piece of fabric with elastic and velcro. this goes around his mid section covering his weenie. he needs to buy this big enuf so not to cut off circulation, but not so big it will work off the weenie. i use this on my male and i have only had good results. for the best fit, take him to the pet store with you. this is also great for taking him places where he might try to 'mark his spot'.

Its called desexing? Or you could choose to keep her indoors, it might be a bit cruel but at least you won't end up with her being pregnant to a mongrel dog

Why does he have to take them to work. How about if you really don't want someone to get pregnant you take them outta the situation. You are setting them up for failure.
